Design ConsiderationsHigh-performance digital media technologies cover a wide range of streaming media and emerging media-based technologies that include integration of audio video, voice and data content into many new and different applications, reshaping the way digital media content gets delivered. Some of the challenges faced by digital media include real-time performance, greater channel density and the software programming flexibility for simultaneous processing of audio video, voice and data streams across both wired and wireless networks. Typical digital media processing functions include encoding and decoding media streams, transcoding (converting from one format to another), and transrating streams (scaling from a higher to a lower bit rate) to accommodate various system-level dependencies. Other processing functions include compression, decompression, encryption, packetization and transport of media streams. TI TMS320DM642 digital media processor and the TMS320C64x™ family of DSPs play a major role in enabling these technologies in video and imaging solutions. Based on the proven TMS320C64x DSP core technology, the DM642 and the C64x™ are the highest-performance multimedia engines that are very easy to upgrade with the latest software Codecs.
