Design Considerations

High-performance digital media technologies cover a wide range of streaming media and emerging media-based technologies that include integration of audio video, voice and data content into many new and different applications, reshaping the way digital media content gets delivered.

Some of the challenges faced by digital media include real-time performance, greater channel density and the software programming flexibility for simultaneous processing of audio video, voice and data streams across both wired and wireless networks. Typical digital media processing functions include encoding and decoding media streams, transcoding (converting from one format to another), and transrating streams (scaling from a higher to a lower bit rate) to accommodate various system-level dependencies. Other processing functions include compression, decompression, encryption, packetization and transport of media streams.

TI TMS320DM642 digital media processor and the TMS320C64x™ family of DSPs play a major role in enabling these technologies in video and imaging solutions. Based on the proven TMS320C64x DSP core technology, the DM642 and the C64x™ are the highest-performance multimedia engines that are very easy to upgrade with the latest software Codecs.

Core Subsystems include:

  • DSP Core Chip Set
Media processing digital engine integrated with advantages to promote multimedia solutions and connectivity.
  • Clock Distribution Circuits
Timing solution designed to refresh the inherent memory module.
  • Video Codec
Streaming media converts to real world analog domain to be amplified which can be viewed on an LCD screen.
  • Audio Codec
Intermediary block that converts the DSP digital media output into an analog signal.
  • Power Management
Provides power solutions that integrates LDOs and converters into a simplified management supply.
  • Amplifiers
Works in conjunction with the codices to amplify signals for audio applications and video displays.
  • Interface
Ethernet connectivity is provided as a standard 10/100 wired interface or with additional chip sets, such as wireless 802.11a/b/g. The network functions may also include a router or switch core. Other connectivity can be provided as peripheral USB 2.0, RS232, or Firewire 1394 connections.
  • Logic
Standard linear logic provides the digital algorithmic gates to facilitate the multimedia solution.
