Priorities | Expenditures | 2008 performance
Decisions made daily by policymakers – at the federal, state, local and international level – can often shape the way we do business and affect our ability to grow. We have an obligation to our shareholders, employees and customers to advocate for responsible government policies that help us achieve our business goals, promote and protect TI's interests, and fulfill our societal obligations.
Whether TI promotes expanded trade opportunities; improved work force and education policies; sound tax, energy and environmental policies; fair and nondiscriminatory treatment of our products; enhanced funding for research; or improved intellectual property protection, we seek to work in a constructive manner to articulate our point of view. Our government relations team, with employees in the U.S., Europe, China and India, focuses on promoting policies that facilitate growth or do not unfairly disadvantage our company and stakeholders.

Public policy priorities
TI's global public policy priorities are aligned carefully with the company's strategic business priorities and our ethical values. This alignment not only ensures our continued growth and profitability – and our customers' success – but also supports our commitment to corporate citizenship.
Political expenditures
TI's political activities and contributions reports are restricted to U.S. activity only. We do not make political contributions in any country outside of the United States.
2008 performance
We launched TI's first political engagement report in the second half of 2008 as an extension of the company's comprehensive Corporate Citizenship Report. The report is updated twice a year and includes:
- A description of TI's policies and procedures for political contributions and expenditures, including confirmation that the governance and shareholder relations committee of our board of directors has oversight responsibility in its charter.
- Criteria for approving contributions.
- Our actual U.S. contributions (amount and recipient).
- Trade association memberships and payments exceeding $25,000 per organization, including the amount used for political purposes either through dues or designated contributions.
- Names of employees responsible for approving contributions.
In 2009, we plan to closely follow the new U.S. administration's public policy priorities as well as global legislative activities.
