Letter to our stakeholders
When we look back at 2008, there's no doubt it was a difficult year, with sweeping global economic challenges we have not seen in generations. It was also a catalyst for change in the company as we refocused our business strategy on areas of future growth such as analog and embedded processing, expanded geographic markets and targeted initiatives that will use technology to improve healthcare, safety and energy conservation.
However, there are two things that didn't change in 2008: our commitment to corporate citizenship and our passion for building a better future.
Corporate citizenship is wired into everything we do – from the way we develop our products, to our care for our employees and neighbors. These conscientious business practices benefit the environment and our communities…but just as importantly, we've seen it improve our bottom line. We believe being a good corporate citizen is a competitive advantage – and a sustainable business model.
Conserving natural resources, upholding the highest standards for employee safety and health and caring for our communities are business practices helping chart the course for our company's long-term sustainability.
In 2008, we continued our journey toward a better future; one we believe leaves us well-positioned to overcome challenges in 2009 and beyond. Our progress is outlined in this report and includes:
- The unveiling of Kilby Labs, a new research center dedicated to inventing technologies several generations ahead of today's business. The labs are a way to generate new ideas, open new markets and create opportunities that lead to business growth.
- The implementation of 159 energy, water and other efficiency projects globally that saved $5.1 million and prevented 32,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
- The best safety rate among U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association member companies for the sixth consecutive year.
- The contribution of more than $13 million to support science, technology, engineering and math research and education programs around the world through TI and the TI Foundation.
- The launch of TI's first political engagement report as an extension of the company's comprehensive corporate citizenship report.
- The successful expansion of the company's citizenship strategy to better meet changing business and community needs.
In 2009, we will each continue to hold ourselves accountable for the social, environmental and economic impact we have on our customers, our employees and our communities. And together, we will continue working to build a better future.
We appreciate your interest in TI's progress and invite your feedback on this report.
Regards,
Rich Templeton
Chairman, president and chief executive officer
