Compliance
California Transparency Act | Dodd Frank Conflict Minerals Act | EICC code of conduct
TI is required to disclose specific supply-chain management practices and performance to comply with two U.S.-based laws: the California Transparency and Supply Chains Act and the U.S. Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. TI also recently joined the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC), which focuses on responsible supply chain management, and voluntary complies with its code of conduct.
Complying with new laws and standards required TI to make significant monetary investments in 2011 for dues, subscriber fees and process changes, as well as additional staff resources. In addition to regulations, TI is working to better understand and address additional customer expectations, which could affect current internal manufacturing processes and controls as well.
Our key compliance activities for the year were in response to:
California Transparency Act
Although the law doesn't require companies doing business in the state to report their efforts to eradicate human trafficking until 2012, TI reported this information in 2011. Our policies and guidelines ensure that the humane treatment of workers applies globally.
Dodd Frank Conflict Minerals Act
While the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission delayed issuing its final guidance for companies to comply with conflict minerals legislation, TI began preparing for its implementation. These efforts included:
- Meeting with the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition's Extractives Work Group and key customers to develop a process that will ensure compliance with conflict minerals and rare earth minerals source requirements across our supply chain.
- Collecting supplier sourcing data using the Electronic Industry's Citizenship Coalition/Global E-Sustainability Initiative's Conflict Minerals Reporting Template. The information provided thus far is incomplete, as our supply chain is still working through the process with their suppliers and sub-suppliers. We have a preliminary report of the smelters and mines in TI's supply chain, and will provide periodic updates as more data becomes available.
- Voluntarily engaging with the Conflict-Free Smelter program, which provides an independent third-party assessment of a smelter's procurement activities.
- Developing a conflict minerals policy that addresses the procurement and use of specific materials and related supplier requirements.
EICC code of conduct
Throughout our 80+ year journey as a high-tech company, TI has enjoyed a great reputation as being ethical and socially and environmentally responsible. We will use the EICC code of conduct as a tool to continue to align and adopt best practices and processes within our industry and will encourage our first-tier suppliers to do the same. More information is included in our public announcement and letter of support.
