Flexible workplace
Employees often say that our flexibility is one of the key reasons why TI is a great place to work. Our flexible workplace leverages technology to give employees the options they need. Many employees can easily telecommute using PDAs and laptop computers. They can also work part time or on flexible schedules. Additionally, most manufacturing employees work compressed work shifts that allow more time off.
In 2008, between 60 percent and 70 percent of TI's U.S. workers reported that they telecommuted at least part of the day each day. More than 3,800 employees work compressed schedules in the manufacturing areas and about 80 employees work part-time schedules. Flex time is also widely utilized.
It has been challenging to develop systems and processes to successfully manage flexible working options. However, through a variety of technologies that we make available to employees, we know that our workers can participate in projects and complete individual tasks anywhere and at any time of day. We are training managers to prepare and manage employees so that employees can succeed in this environment.
TI's work-life programs help all employees; however, they are particularly helpful to women. Our programs help women, who are often the family's primary caretaker, stay in the work force while taking care of their families' needs. From offering summer camps to on-site breast pumps, we aim to make caring for children more convenient for working mothers where possible.
In our industry, retaining and advancing women is vital. Only 21 percent of U.S. students taking college-level engineering courses are female. And although 26.5 percent of our new hires in 2008 were women – up slightly from 2007 – we want to continue to attract more.
