After reporting our carbon footprint for the second consecutive year, TI continued to work toward expanding how we collect and monitor greenhouse gas data to include all Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
In 2009, our carbon footprint was 1.73 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e), down from 2.03 in 2008. Our next step is to identify areas where we can continue to reduce emissions. We will consider quantifying Scope 3 emissions in the future.
In 2009, TI implemented 86 energy, water and other efficiency projects, which saved $3.7 million and prevented an estimated 22,000 metric tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
The U.S. semiconductor industry met the 10 percent perfluorocarbon (PFC) emissions reduction goal from 1995 baseline levels. TI was also able to meet its target reductions, successfully reducing our global and U.S. absolute PFC emissions by 10 percent from our 1995 baseline. This achievement was possible through ongoing efficiency and abatement activities and also in part due to a decline in production during the 2008-2009 economic downturn.
For 2010, we have an energy reduction goal to reduce or avoid $4 million in energy expenses. We will also work to better understand CO2 emissions accounting requirements proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other relevant regulating bodies worldwide to ensure compliance with any new regulations.
