Ozone-depleting substances
Ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) are widely used in refrigerators, air conditioners, fire extinguishers, cleaning solvents and electronic equipment. They can deplete the earth's protective ozone layer.
TI does not use Class I or II ODSs as raw materials to manufacture semiconductor products. However, TI does use some Class I and Class II ODSs in our closed-loop facility refrigeration systems for cooling equipment heat exchangers. Our closed-loop systems contain and reuse these chemicals, and environmental discharges occur only in the event of equipment leaks. If leaks of any quantity are detected, they are repaired as soon as possible by certified technicians.
To reduce or eliminate releases of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), TI:
- Developed a standard more than 20 years ago to phase out the use of Class I ODSs worldwide, in support of the Montreal Protocol and U.S. Clean Air Act.
- Stopped using CFCs in open-loop manufacturing systems in 1993.
- Strictly monitors CFC leakage rates worldwide, and repairs or replaces equipment when necessary.
- Is eliminating the use of CFC refrigerants and phasing out CFC-dependent equipment.
- Implemented a CFC refrigerant recycling program.
- Banned any future CFC purchases.
