Description Report 2011 response
Profile   2008 2009 2010 2011
Environmental
Disclosure on management approach: environmental
See environment.

Materials

EN1 Materials used by weight or volume
See direct materials purchased.
EN2 Percentage of materials used that are recycled
Although most chemicals used in semiconductor processing must be ultra-pure, we recently began to collect and reuse oxide slurry at some of our sites. Where feasible, we also collect waste acids from our processes for reuse in abatement equipment. During construction projects, we give preference to materials containing recycled products, although we do not currently track the total amount of recycled material purchased for these projects. See waste management.

Energy

EN3 Direct energy consumption by primary energy source
See direct energy use.
EN4 Indirect energy consumption by primary source
See indirect energy use.
EN5 Energy saved due to conservation and efficiency improvements
See conservation activity history.
EN6 Initiatives to provide energy-efficient or renewable energy based products and services and reductions achieved
TI develops energy efficient products that reduce power consumption and boost product longevity. TI also works to reduce energy use in all operations.
EN7 Initiatives to reduce indirect energy consumption and reductions achieved as a result
See reduction efforts.

Water

EN8 Total water withdrawal by source
See water sources.
EN9 Water sources significantly affected by withdrawal of water
We are not aware of any negative impacts from our operations.
EN10 Percentage and total volume of water recycled and reused
See water use.

Biodiversity

EN11 Location and size of land owned, leased, managed in, or adjacent to, protected areas and areas of high biodiversity value outside protected areas
TI does not operate in or near areas identified as having high biodiversity value.
EN12 Significant impacts of activities, products, and services on biodiversity in protected areas and areas of high biodiversity value outside protected areas
We don’t believe that our operations impact areas identified as having high biodiversity value.
EN13 Habitats protected or restored
We sponsor and volunteer in indigenous tree plantings near our sites around the world. We also participate in cleanup activities in communities near our operations.
EN14 Strategies, current actions, and future plans for managing impacts on biodiversity
To our knowledge, none of TI's sites impact legally-protected land or areas of high biodiversity value. TI generally does not manage special prevention or remediation efforts to protect and restore natural habitats, nor does it currently have plans to do so.
EN15 Number of IUCN Red List species and national conservation list species with habitats in areas affected by operations, by level of extinction risk
Endangered and critically endangered International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List species have been identified in four of the eight regions where TI has manufacturing operations. However, it appears they are not in close proximity to our sites, which are generally located in heavily industrialized areas.

Emissions, effluents and waste

EN16 Total direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by weight
See carbon footprint.
EN17 Other relevant indirect greenhouse gas emissions by weight
We currently do not track other GHG emissions (except for European air travel); however we have several initiatives in place to reduce related emissions. These initiatives address employee commuting, company fleet use and product shipping.
EN18 Initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reductions achieved
See reducing contributions.
EN19 Emissions of ozone-depleting substances by weight
See remaining refrigerant.
EN20 Other significant air emissions by type and weight
See NOx and VOC emissions.
EN21 Total water discharge by quality and destination
See water discharge.
EN22 Total weight of waste by type and disposal method
See waste by type.
EN23 Total number and volume of significant spills
No significant spills occurred.
EN24 Weight of transported, imported, exported or treated waste deemed hazardous under the terms of the Basel Convention Annex I, II, III and VIII, and percentage of transported waste shipped internationally
TI shipped an estimated 94,390 kilograms of waste deemed hazardous under the terms of the Basel Convention Annexes.
EN25 Identity, size, protected status and biodiversity value of water bodies and related habitats significantly affected by the reporting organization's discharges of water and runoff
Not applicable to TI at this time as we are unaware of any habitats or water bodies significantly impacted by our sites.

Products and services

EN26 Initiatives to manage the environmental impacts of products and services and extent of impact reduction
We pay close attention to understanding and managing the environmental and social impacts of our products, including product end-of-life.

Semiconductor manufacturing suppliers are held accountable for the same environmental and social considerations through the CETRAQ process.

Education Technology suppliers adhere to similar policies.
EN27 Percentage of products sold that is reclaimed at the end of the products' useful life by product category
All TI Education Technology sold in Europe may be reclaimed at the end of the products useful life through take back collection agreements with all EU countries where the product is sold. Approximately 98 percent of each of the company's ET products can be recycled, reused or recovered.

Compliance

EN28 Monetary value of significant fines and total number of nonmonetary sanctions for, noncompliance with environmental regulations
TI received no significant (greater than $25,000) fines or sanctions.

Transport

EN29 Significant environmental impacts of transportation
We do not currently aggregate the environmental impacts of TI's product transportation; however we take care to minimize waste through product packaging initiatives. We also reduce emissions and energy use where feasible, including efforts to minimize product shipping, fleet efficiency and employee commuting globally.

Overall

EN30 Total environmental protection expenditures by type
TI spent about $13 million in environmental protection-related capital and about $35 million in environmental protection-related operating expenses.
EN31* Toxics Release Inventory
See Toxics Release Inventory.
*Indicator developed by TI.
