2013 marks TI's ninth year of encouraging employees to try biking to work during the League of American Bicyclists' Bike to Work Week in May.

This year, TI had participation from 371 cyclists at 32 TI sites in 13 countries. TI commuters biked more than 4,200 miles to and from work, saving the equivalent of 212 gallons of gasoline and avoiding 1.8 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

TI sites engaged in friendly competition to recruit the greatest number of commuters and bike the most miles. The 2013 winners are:

  • Most number of commuters: Bangalore, India, had a strong lead with 101 bike commuters.
  • Most miles biked: Freising, Germany, cyclists went the distance with 1,095 miles biked.
  • Best commuter support: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, once again set the bar with a motorcycle escort, bike jerseys and certificates provided to the bike commuters.
  • Highest percentage of employee participation: Oslo, Norway, achieved 31 percent participation.
  • Longest commute: Bernd Redlingshoefer of TI Freising commuted 86 kilometers (53 miles) round trip.

Sharon Wagner of Dallas, TI's Bike to Work Day coordinator, enjoys the increased visibility of bike commuters on TI campuses during Bike to Work Day.

"It is exciting to see the number of bike commuters on Bike to Work Day," she said. "The bike racks were filled to capacity and overflowing. Groups of cyclists aligned their neighborhood routes and rode in together, resulting in a parade of TI bike jerseys on trails and streets around TI campuses."
