Sharing with competitors for energy efficiency
(08/10)
TI and its competitors agree: sharing best practices to evaluate and improve their energy efficiency of semiconductor manufacturing facilities benefits everyone and the environment.

That's why semiconductor companies collaborated to develop a tool to gauge the energy and water consumption of a "fab" (a semiconductor wafer fabrication facility). The tool enables the companies to compare themselves and identify areas of improvement. This helps all in pursuit of a "greener" industry.

The tool, called FABS21, allows users to compare up to 46 different building- and system-level metrics, distilled into two categories (energy and water consumption). Such metrics help facility operators address the challenges of sustainable manufacturing by continuously benchmarking peer facilities.

Paul Westbrook, TI's manager of sustainable development, who led the company's involvement with this program, said "we think it will be a really important tool for us. It helps us prioritize energy-efficiency projects and identify opportunities."
