Taking steps to end breast cancer: TI raises over $45,000 for Komen
(07/10)
Texas Instruments, along with its employees, contractors and friends raised more than $45,000 to help find a cure for breast cancer by participating in the North Texas Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure recently, making it one of the largest contributors at this year's event.

The Komen Race for the Cure is both a local and global effort to end breast cancer. Started in 1982, Komen for the Cure today is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. The annual North Texas event is one of two employee-driven walks that TI participates in at the corporate level. TI employees participate in Komen events in other communities around the world as well.

"TI engages employees in our citizenship decisions and supports causes they are passionate about," said Trisha Cunningham, TI's worldwide corporate citizenship director. "TI's Womens' Initiative organized the team for the North Texas walk, but the Komen Race was broadly supported across our workforce since so many people have been either impacted by this disease themselves or had a family member who was."

Paul Fego, a TI vice president and manager, participated this year in memory of his mom, who died of breast cancer.

"When people see that companies such as TI are willing to commit, they know that the cause is a good one. The more companies that participate, the more people will begin to identify with the cause and the need for participation," he said.

More than 11,000 runners and walkers overall, including 800 survivors, participated in the event, which raises money for and awareness about breast cancer. That total included more than 230 TI-affiliated participants.

TI employees raised more than $33,500 in donations. One is currently the top individual fundraiser for the North Texas race, raising almost $8,000 in donations – more than $3,000 ahead of the next-nearest individual fundraiser.

Along with the employee fundraising efforts, TI made a corporate donation of $12,000 to the North Texas Komen affiliate this year. The company also held on-site registration and fund raising events at various TI Dallas-area sites.

To help get employees into the spirit of the cause, TI created a "Real Men Wear Pink" video, featuring male employees holding up photos of their wives, mothers and daughters to raise awareness about the event. Watch video.

Fego said he began participating in the Komen race after his daughter honored his mother through a memorial program associated with the event.

"Our family then decided to participate in the race," he said. "The Komen is not for my mother but for my wife, my daughter and my two granddaughters. The money raised at Komen will help the future."
