Doug Wilson, TI Melaka managing director, presents books to a school representative.
Through a grant provided by the TI Community Fund, TI has collaborated with The Asia Foundation's Books for Asia program providing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) textbooks to 238 primary schools in Melaka, Malaysia.
An additional 7,000 books have been distributed to schools and libraries in the eastern part of Malaysia.
In addition, TI's grant to the Asia Foundation provided $500 each to eight of the neediest secondary schools to enhance their libraries and establish TI Reading Corners where donated books are displayed.
Recently, TI together with the Asia Foundation and the Melaka State Ministry of Education sponsored a STEM essay contest for secondary school students in Melaka.
More than 400 students submitted essays about a book received through the TI donation. An independent panel of judges selected 10 winners, five who submitted essays in English and five who submitted essays in Bahasa Malay.
Winners received a certificate, a TI Nspire CX calculator and a TI backpack. Their schools also received an additional allotment of donated books.
The essay contest awards and book donations were handed out at a ceremony at a local school in Melaka earlier this summer.
Yang Bahagia Tuan Haji Kasim Bin Mohamad, director of Melaka State Ministry of Education, said he was pleased with TI's continuous support for local education and thanked the company for its corporate social responsibility efforts.
He encouraged more companies to follow TI’s example and contribute to local education to continue building a talented workforce in Malaysia.
Officials from the Ministry of Education of Kuala Lumpur and Melaka and executives from TI and the Asia Foundation also participated in the event.
