Longtime product development and sustainable engineering expert Larry Randall focused his attention on dimensional weight, recycled materials and branding opportunities early last year as he began designing a new box to ship TI products.

Longtime TI product development and sustainable engineering expert Larry Randall designed a new, smaller box to ship TI products that weighs less than a half pound, uses recycled materials and eliminates the need to use nonrecyclable foam.

In the first four months, construction of the newly designed boxes prevented use of 4,650 cubic feet of foam over the previous design -- enough to fill about 700 standard-size bathtubs.

By reducing the overall size of the boxes (the old boxes weighed two pounds), the company saves money by avoiding dimensional weight charges.

"If you can do more with less, you're saving the shipping, box and materials costs that go with it," Randall said. "You're making a smaller footprint, and it's a win for everyone.”

Read more about this redesign effort and how it is making a difference to the environment as well as the company’s bottom line.
