Helping someone get back on their feet again is one of the main reasons Joshua Ling, a TI product engineer in Melaka, Malaysia, decided to volunteer his time and services at Befrienders Melaka.

"It feels great when you are able to reach out and help someone, to help them find their direction again when they are lost," Ling said, "It really makes my life feel more meaningful."

Befrienders Melaka (also known as Malacca) provides emotional support over the telephone to people in the community who are suicidal or in distress. Ling, who has been involved with the Befrienders for more than five years, was first introduced to the organization through a friend. After attending a preview session, he realized the need for such a service and signed up immediately.

Ling has been dedicating his services consistently, spending an average of 12-15 hours a month working as a volunteer. He also held the position of Befrienders Melaka chairman for two years.

"At Befrienders, we are there to support," Ling said. "We don't provide solutions, but instead encourage people to explore options on how they can help themselves."

In addition to helping others, Ling believes that his time at the Befrienders has helped hone his listening skills.

"You realize that communication is not just about getting the information, it is reading between the lines and truly understanding the message someone is trying to convey," he said.

Joshua Ling won a 2012 TI Founders Community Service Award for dedicating his time and services in the community.

What special skills or experience have you acquired through volunteering?
"By helping others, I have gained a deeper insight into human behavior. In my volunteer work, I deal with many types of personalities and have learned how every person is different. This has helped me to be more sensitive to the feelings of others. It has also taught me to be more patient."

What does winning this award mean to you?
"I think it is really great that TI has this kind of recognition program. Winning the award is an honor, but I feel the real winner is Befrienders Melaka, who will be receiving the cash award. It is a non-profit organization and depends heavily on fund-raising activities to run its programs, so this added cash will really go a long way in supporting our efforts."
