Inspired by a speech that President Barack Obama gave about being a more active citizen, TI employee Olga Pope sprang to action and became a volunteer at Hope's Door.

This nonprofit organization located in Plano, Texas offers intervention and prevention services to individuals and families in the Dallas area who are impacted by domestic abuse. It also provides educational programs that enhance the community's capacity to respond.

As a volunteer, Pope takes care of the children of women who have experienced domestic violence as they go through their group therapy and individual counseling sessions.

Pope, an electrical design engineer in TI's DLP® Products group in Plano, has been volunteering at Hope's Door for about three years, working one or two hours every week. She has worked with about 100 children over the years, which has allowed their mothers to receive the support and counseling needed to cope with violence in their homes or the strength required to escape the cycle of domestic abuse.

"President Obama's speech encouraged me to give back to my country and community," Pope said. "I had just finished my Master's degree when I heard his speech, so I felt like I had time and capacity to give back."

Since 1989, Hope's Door has provided safe shelter for over 3,700 women and their children and answered more than 16,000 crisis line calls.

What special skills or experience have you acquired through volunteering?
"The skills that I have learned are patience and the ability to think on my feet. Volunteering with children who are dealing with domestic violence has taught me to be more patient and compassionate. Seeing these kids overcome adversity and find normalcy is inspiring."

What does winning this award mean to you?
"During my three years of volunteering, I have seen Hope's Door need to cut back on some services due to reductions in funding. This has been disheartening to watch. I know that in this economy, nonprofits more than ever are in need of more funds. I am so happy that TI is able to contribute $1,000 to this wonderful organization."
