Engineering change in high-performance computing

When Murtaza thinks about innovation in the semiconductor industry, he calls it a revolution.

He finds inspiration in the revolutionary ways electronics have changed the world, and he's particularly passionate about low-power semiconductor innovations that are shaping the computational paradigm of the future.

One of Murtaza's latest innovations involved the use of digital signal processor (DSP) and system-on-a-chip (SoC) platforms for high-performance computing applications. He and his team were able to transform the complex computational design of such systems to enable portable, low-power end equipment.

Medical imaging devices are one example of an area in which such technology can bring about revolutionary changes by transforming the quality of care people around the world receive. As the semiconductor industry enables smaller, low-power devices, Murtaza sees healthcare technology taking a similar path cell phones have taken and evolving from cart-based systems to hand-held point-of-care equipment.

Ultrasound scanners, in fact, have already done so.

When Murtaza isn't innovating, he enjoys re-reading literature he read when he was younger. Because even though the stories haven't changed, he says, his perspective on life has.

"What a roomful of computers was capable of doing a few years ago, we can now do in our palm."
