Engineering change in design and test

Perry D. has a long history of enabling cutting-edge TI devices. From modem technology to the latest high-speed converters and power amps for audio and telecom, what Perry finds really rewarding is showing his children the latest products using his innovations, and bringing his work to life in their eyes.

Today, Perry works on design and test techniques to help shorten TI’s time to market for customers. In fact, many of his achievements have development windows that have shrunk from months to days. His work is critical, especially as communications and consumer electronics customers aim to roll out new, differentiating products that offer the latest features and applications.

In fact, Perry says finding time to do R&D is really one of the biggest challenges facing semiconductor innovation today. The time it takes to introduce a design concept and deliver a working part to a customer is continuously shrinking. Further complicating matters is the complexity of today’s devices. Perry says it’s a challenge trying to defy the law of physics to make things happen in a short time frame.

In the years ahead, Perry sees exciting opportunities with haptics and the use of touch technology to take action. While it’s existed for decades, haptics has exploded in recent years, becoming extremely popular in handheld, portable and touch-screen enabled consumer electronic devices. As more applications roll out in new areas like automotive, Perry says new challenges for design and test will arise, bringing many new opportunities for innovation.

“The difference between a great idea and true innovation is whether you can bring a device to light in the time frame a customer can use it.”
