   Kilby Center Facts

The $154 million R&D facility is one of the most technologically advanced semiconductor Research and Development facilities in the world.

Kilby Center

What did it take to build the Kilby Center?

  • 5 months of design, 12 months of construction, and 3 months for equipment installation
  • TI team of 14 engineers and 1,200 contractors
What went into building the R&D-1 Facility?
  • 580,000 square feet-13 football fields of space
  • 105,000 cubic yards of concrete-enough to build 53 miles of two-lane highway
  • 7,500 tons of concrete reinforcing steel-about 3,000 miles end-to-end
  • Enough cooling capacity and electricity for 2,300 homes in Texas-7,800 tons of AC and 24 megawatts of power
  • Enough de-ionized water (2,000 times cleaner than common tap water) to fill 30 swimming pools every day
  • Enough compressed air to fill 2,250 party balloons every minute
  • Over 100 miles of electrical wire
  • Enough lights to illuminate 75 tennis courts
  • 200mm Semiconductor Processing (.10 micron)
  • Total facility occupies 10.5 acres
  • Main building is 584,000 square feet
  • Cleanroom space is 50,000 square feet
  • Employee population of approximately 500
  • $6.8M of the $154M of the building cost were spent for safety and environment systems
  • Project started construction in January 1996 and will be operational in July 1997
  • The facility includes state-of-the-art:
    - Spill control & secondary containment
    - Advanced abatement systems
    - Sophisticated monitoring and detection systems
    - Well-trained environmental, safety and health staff
