Texas Senate was proud to recognize you on March 12, 2001 with Senate
Resolution Number 437. I congratulate you on winning the prestigious
Nobel Prize for Physics. Your tremendous accomplishments are a tribute
to the State of Texas. It is truly my honor to present you with

Senate Resolution No. 437
WHEREAS,
The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in recognizing Jack
Saint Clair Kilby, the former director of engineering and technology
at Texas Instruments and the famed inventor of the integrated circuit,
on his recent selection for this year's Nobel Prize for Physics;
and
WHEREAS,
Jack Kilby began his meteoric career in 1947 with his employment
at Centralab Division of Globe Union, Incorporated, in Milwaukee;
he joined Texas Instruments in Dallas in 1958, and during that summer,
he conceived and built the first electronic circuit in which all
of the components were fabricated in a single piece of semiconductor
material half the size of a paper clip; his invention of the monolithic
integrated circuit-the microchip-made history with its successful
laboratory demonstration on September 12, 1958; and
WHEREAS,
Jack Kilby's invention of the microchip laid the conceptual and
technical foundation for the entire field of modern microelectronics
and made possible the advanced computers and networks that form
today's information age; and
WHEREAS,
In addition, Mr. Kilby went on to pioneer military, industrial,
and commercial applications of microchip technology and later co-invented
the hand-held calculator and the thermal printer for use in portable
data terminals; he now holds over 60 United States patents; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Kilby is the recipient of two of the nation's most prestigious
honors in science and engineering; he received the National Medal
of Science in 1970 and was inducted into the National Inventors
Hall of Fame in 1982, taking his place along with such innovative
giants as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and the Wright Brothers; and
WHEREAS,
A man of great vision who has distinguished himself through his
professional accomplishments, Jack Kilby is one of the elite group
of people around the world who can truly be credited with changing
history and for helping to establish the basis of all modern technology;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED,
That the Senate of the State of Texas, 77th Legislature, hereby
commend Jack Saint Clair Kilby on his outstanding achievements and
extend congratulations to him on earning the Nobel Prize for Physics;
and, be it further
RESOLVED,
That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Jack Kilby as an
expression of esteem for the Texas Senate.
