TI broke ground in 2004 on the 1.1-million-square-foot facility so that additional manufacturing capacity would be ready for use when needed. TI plans to ship the first chips from this facility by the end of 2010. The analog chips manufactured here will be used in hundreds of end-equipment products ranging from portable consumer electronics, such as smartphones and netbooks, to telecom and computing systems with complex power requirements.
RFAB is located in Richardson, Texas, near TI's Dallas headquarters. TI considered numerous locations around the world, but selected Texas for several reasons: home court advantage and proximity to TI's existing headquarters; a positive competitive environment; and access to research and development. This site was selected after a collaborative agreement was reached between the state, local government entities and the University of Texas system to promote the North Texas region's technological future by boosting funding for engineering and research programs at the University of Texas at Dallas.
In addition to being the first 300-millimeter factory to produce analog chips, RFAB is also among the semiconductor industry’s most environmentally responsible production plants. RFAB was the first such facility to earn Gold certification with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
