Commute solutions for TI employees aim to reduce ozone levels

Since 2001, TI has led an annual Commute Solutions Campaign during ozone season (May-October), to educate employees and promote alternatives to single-occupant commuting in gas-guzzling vehicles. The purpose of the campaign is to reduce emissions and related problems that contribute to pollution and improve quality of life for all. Each month of the campaign is dedicated to educating and promoting a particular commute solution, beginning this year with “Bike/Walk/Brownbag Lunch Month” this past May.
On May 18, more than 35 TI employees in Texas participated in “Bike to Work Day,” saving about 725 miles of automobile driving and helping to reduce ground-level ozone and air pollution.
In addition to “Bike/Walk/Brownbag Lunch Month,” TI encourages a variety of commute solutions including “Clean Vehicle Month” in June, where employees are encouraged to drive an alternative fuel vehicle (AFV). In an effort to promote the use of these types of vehicles, TI provides authorized parking permits to employees and contractors who drive an AFV.
Commute Solutions offers many benefits: a reduction in ground-level ozone and air pollution, decreased stress, reduced wear and tear on personal vehicles, and reduced traffic congestion, as well as a boost to pocketbooks with less spent at the gas pump.
TI’s commitment to clean air and the promotion of alternative transportation dates back to the 1970s, when TI owned and operated an on-site shuttle system and employee vanpool program. Today, the program has expanded to engage more employees. On-site cafeterias, banking and concierge services reduce the need to run errands by car. Bicycle storage and on-site showering facilities encourage employees to bike and walk.
Many employees also enjoy the opportunity to telecommute or work flexible hours to avoid rush-hour traffic. Most importantly, in 2004, TI began offering free annual passes for bus and light-rail services to all Dallas-area employees. Hundreds of employees enjoy this benefit every day.
Similar programs exist at TI sites around the world.
