The Dallas Center for the Performing Arts recently announced it reached a milestone with gifts of $1M or more from 108 different families and organizations more than 2 years before it opens. This number of $1M donors is unprecedented for a capital campaign for an arts or cultural organization in the U.S. The latest gifts bring the total raised to more than $252M toward the Center’s $275M capital campaign goal.

The Texas Instruments Foundation (TIF) granted $5M to name the performance hall in the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts’ Winspear Opera House in honor of Margaret McDermott, wife of TI founder Eugene McDermott. This grant was contingent on a dollar-for-dollar match, and another $11M was raised in the community in support of naming the Margaret McDermott Performance Hall.

“The TI Foundation was built on the idea that communities are one of our greatest resources and should share in our successes,” said Ann Pomykal, executive director of the TI Foundation. “We support a range of civic, educational and cultural movements – all with the specific purpose of enhancing the quality of community life. We are delighted to see the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts reach this impressive benchmark, and we are proud to be a part of this investment in the city.”

The campaign to build the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts is the largest cultural initiative ever taken in the history of Dallas. Currently under construction in the downtown Dallas Arts District, the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts will open in 2009 as a new multi-venue center for music, opera, theater, dance and other performing arts productions. This center, the most significant new performing arts building project since New York’s Lincoln Center, will include four new venues as well as the Dallas Arts District’s first public park.
