Texas Instruments has long been committed to energy innovation. The company continues its tradition of building a greener future as a contributing sponsor for the 2007 Solar Decathlon, which is put on by the United States Department of Energy. The bi-annual event brought together 20 university teams from around the globe in a competition to design, build and operate the most energy-efficient and attractive solar-powered home. The teams came together to form a “solar village” on the National Mall in Washington D.C., Oct. 12-20. The Decathlon’s goal is to engage young innovators to advance solar technology and reduce the cost of solar-powered homes.

“TI believes universities have the power to fuel innovation, and we are committed to helping students see the great potential of science and engineering,” said Paul Westbrook, TI’s Sustainable Development Manager. “Events like the Solar Decathlon are crucial in bringing together technological innovation and environmentalism to usher in a new age of responsible progress.”

As customers grow increasingly concerned with developing energy-efficient products, TI continues to innovate with smarter, low-power products, addressing power challenges to make solar power and sustainable designs more viable. Many teams competing in the Decathlon are using TI technology – which helps solar inverters achieve maximum system efficiency and cost-effectiveness – in their designs.

Today, TI is breaking new ground with intelligent, semiconductor-based Digital Signal Processing, Microcontroller and Analog Power Management technologies to help customers innovate to reduce the amount of energy consumed daily in consumer and industrial applications around the world.

As the only semiconductor company sponsoring the event, TI donated employee volunteer time and provided support for the official Decathlon photographer. In addition, TI hosted a sustainability workshop presented by Paul Westbrook, as well as a breakfast for competing students.
