Texas Instruments President and CEO Rich Templeton received the Akira Inoue Award for outstanding achievement in environment, safety and health (ESH) in the semiconductor industry.

The award is sponsored by SEMI, the global industry association serving the manufacturing supply chains for the microelectronic, display and photovoltaic industries.

Templeton was recognized for his contributions to ESH leadership at TI, which has resulted in the introduction of innovative, environmentally friendly products and processes and operational excellence in health and safety for employees. He is the eighth recipient of this prestigious industry award.

“We recognize Rich Templeton for ESH leadership,” said Stanley Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. “Under his direction, TI has made a priority of reducing air emissions, energy consumption, water use and waste while increasing resource conservation and energy efficiency. His commitment to ESH has led to outstanding achievements at Texas Instruments and throughout the industry.”

Achievements cited by the Akira Inoue Award committee in selecting Templeton include:

  • TI built the world’s first “green” semiconductor manufacturing facility.
  • TI has had the best safety rate in the company’s history – and the best safety rate in the U.S. semiconductor industry – for the last three years.
  • TI is leading the industry in providing digital and analog solutions with low power consumption and greater energy efficiency.
  • TI received numerous awards and recognitions for outstanding ESH performance and environmental stewardship from customers, media and government organizations.

“At Texas Instruments, being a good company steward means helping our customers make the world smarter, healthier, safer and more fun,” Templeton said. “For more than a decade, TI has had the public goals of zero accidents and zero waste. We’ve proven that reducing injuries and illnesses and eliminating waste in our operations increases profit and positively impacts employees’ lives.”

The Akira Inoue Award is sponsored by the ESH division of SEMI. The award is named after the late Akira Inoue, past president of Tokyo Electron Limited and a strong advocate of the environment, safety and health.

The award recognizes individuals in industry and academia who have made significant contributions to ESH by exercising leadership or demonstrating innovation in the development of processes, products or materials that improve environmental safety and health.

Past recipients of the award include Pasquale Pistorio, former CEO of STMicroelectronics; Craig Barrett, former CEO of Intel Corporation; Farhang Shadman, director of the Engineering and Research Center for Environmentally Benign Semiconductor Manufacturing at the University of Arizona; Saburo Kusama, president of Epson Corp.; Isao Uchigasaki, chairman of the board of Hitachi Chemical Company; Gerald Ermentrout, vice president and general manager of the Electronics Division of Air Products; and Chang-Gyu Hwang, president and CEO of the Semiconductor Business of Samsung Electronics.

“When it comes to ESH, our goal is straightforward,” Templeton said. “We want to build a better future for not only our company and customers, but for those who work at TI and the communities in which we operate.”
