TI awards $1 million to Rice University through Leadership University Program
TI has once again chosen Rice University as one of its primary academic partners for research in embedded processing. An inaugural member of TI's Leadership University Program, Rice's digital signal processing (DSP) researchers have won a new, three-year $1 million grant under the program.
"There is no greater recognition of excellence within the DSP community
than being chosen as a Texas Instruments' Leadership University," said Behnaam
Aazhang, J.S. Abercrombie professor and chair of the department of electrical
and computer engineering. "TI is the undisputed global leader in DSP, and
we're proud to say that the company has supported Rice's DSP research for decades."
Rice's groundbreaking DSP research includes innovative designs for a new single-pixel camera, next-generation cell phones and wireless networks, "smart" systems for medical emergency kits, new designs for power-stingy mobile devices and the application of TI's DaVinci™® technology in video surveillance systems.
"Through TI's global university program, we strive to push the limits of technology to help facilitate next-generation innovations. By tapping the minds of academic researchers, students and TI scientists, we facilitate deep collaboration between TI and academia to foster these developments," said Cathy Wicks, TI's worldwide university program manager. "We believe that relationships with universities like Rice and others across the globe contribute to the overall success of TI and its customers by providing them access to first-rate research and talent."
TI established the Leadership University Program in 1999. Three leading universities in the technology field were selected as inaugural members of the pilot program for university and industry collaboration in research – Rice University, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In addition to receiving a grant to fund research
over three years, each university benefits from enhanced access to TI's worldwide teams
and an opportunity to work with each other on future TI-funded programs.
At the end of this year's three-year commitment (in 2011), TI will
have invested $12 million over 12 years to the original three universities.
Subsequently, TI has added Leadership Universities in China and India.
