HIV/AIDS programs undergoing cutbacks get support from TI Foundation

At its May meeting, the TI Foundation approved a $50,000 donation to the AIDS Interfaith Network (AIN), a faith-based HIV/AIDS service organization that provides prevention programs and direct care services to meet the practical, emotional and spiritual needs of people suffering from HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the grant is to assist AIN's general operations, which are faced with downsizing due to reductions in federal government funding.

"Government funding of HIV/AIDS programs continues to be shifted to direct medical care and medications and away from support services and HIV prevention," said Steven Pace, executive director of AIN. "Because many of AIN's clients have multiple needs beyond HIV/AIDS — such as mental health, substance abuse, homelessness, and lack of transportation — the cuts dramatically affect them.

"The TI Foundation’s grant will help AIN maintain these critical services for our clients, as well as our education/prevention programs, to stem the spread of HIV in Dallas."

Under the terms of the grant, the TI Foundation will provide $25,000 immediately with the second $25,000 being awarded contingent on a two-for-one match where AIN will raise an additional $50,000.

Despite the reduction of government funds, AIN has maintained all of its programs and services, including those for which all government funds were cut, and in 2007 provided services to nearly 2,000 people with HIV/AIDS and reached 20,000 at-risk people with HIV prevention programs.

"This grant is another example of TI's leadership in addressing HIV/AIDS issues," said Andy Smith, TI employee and chair of the AIN board of trustees. "TI has been vital in working with AIN to form the Dallas Coalition of HIV/AIDS Services, including bringing donors together and providing coalition leadership. The coalition will provide long-term relief by helping AIN and other partner agencies cut overhead expenses, increase collaboration and develop strategies for organizational consolidation."

In addition to partnering with AIN, over the years TI has provided funds, volunteers and leadership to AIDS Lifewalk, AIDS Services of Dallas and the Resource Center of Dallas.
