Many TI employees volunteered with various United Way agencies during the fall campaign.

TI and its employees responded to United Way's appeal to "Live United: Give. Advocate. Volunteer." by pledging more than $2.9 million to United Way last year. That amount, combined with a TI Foundation gift of $2.1 million, resulted in a $5 million investment toward lasting improvements in the communities where TI operates.

The prior year's campaign raised $4.7 million.

"TI employees have always had a legacy of caring, and this year is no different. They have answered our communities' call for assistance during this great time of need," said Rich Templeton, TI's president, chairman and CEO and chairman of the 2008 United Way campaign. "I am very proud of our company and employees for the level of community engagement and especially the support they give through United Way."

United Way remains TI's primary health and human services investment. TI leaders say that United Way consistently excels at researching, addressing and resolving the most urgent community needs. Its process is simple: Identify the issue, find the right agency, offer financial support and measure results.

Giving

United Way leadership givers – those who pledge annual gifts of $1,000 or more – continue to be big contributors to the TI campaign. The leadership giving campaign ranks No. 1 in the Dallas area, with 743 TI leadership givers – an 8 percent increase from 2007.

Advocating

TI employees across the company actively participated in the United Way campaign by advocating for their peers to join them and "Live United." Hundreds of employees served as campaign leaders or team members, attended trainings and fundraising events, and developed ways to bring the United Way message to their peers.

Volunteering

Hundreds of employees came together throughout the year to volunteer their time and expertise to United Way partner agencies. For example:

  • Employees from the one of the business groups committed to a week of service at the Salvation Army's Carr P. Collins Social Service Center and served lunch to clients who depend on the center to help get their lives back on track.
  • Twenty-eight members of another TI team volunteered at CampFire USA. "We are so grateful for all the hard work that the team did to improve the appearance of our signage, parking lights and metal doors," said Rita De Young, Campfire USA executive director. "The project was so well-organized that it was completed without a hitch. We especially appreciate the creative way the group found the funds to purchase the paint and supplies."

More than 300 Dallas-area employees volunteered an estimated 1,100 hours with United Way agencies during the fall campaign. More than 75 employees helped kick off TI Tucson's campaign by volunteering with United Way partner agencies across the city.

"Community involvement has become a key part of our culture," said Alan Johnson, TI Tucson campaign leader. "Our volunteer activities have helped make us a stronger, more cohesive group. Teambuilding through volunteer activities just makes sense – it's a win-win situation for both the company and the community."
