The Dallas Children's Theater is a powerful educational resource for schools in the greater Dallas community.

In February the TI Foundation board approved a grant of $40,000 for the Dallas Children's Theater (DCT) to provide general operations support in response to the recession and funding for the capital campaign. The TI Foundation will be the principal donor for classroom soundproofing for the theater.

The largest professional theater for youth in the Southwest; DCT attracted more than 270,000 children and families in 2007-08. Its student matinee performance series served 60,000 students from Dallas ISD, Richardson ISD and 15 other North Texas school districts. About 10,000 free tickets are given to disadvantaged youth annually.

DCT's literacy learning program serves 3,500 students at 23 sites in the Dallas-area schools, and year-round theater arts classes train more than 2,500 young people.

TI and the TI Foundation have a long history of involvement with the DCT, supporting DCT's educational activities for decades. The company and foundation received the Rosewood Award (DCT's highest honor) in 2008.

The TI Foundation also gave two smaller community service grants:

  • $15,000 went to the Close the Gap on Hunger campaign for the North Texas Food Bank, whose largest member agencies have reported a 25% increase in the number of clients served in the last quarter of 2008.
  • $7,000 was given to St. Simon's After School Program to support about 400 elementary school children and their families in 15 Dallas ISD schools by providing a safe, nurturing place for children after school.
