High power DC systems are employed in automobile engines, aircraft in-cabin devices, industrial factory equipment and photovoltaic units. There are a variety of system problems that can create conditions ripe for arc faults: damaged terminals, corroded wires, insulation wear, etc. Arcs are catastrophic system failures that can lead to severe damage to life and property.

The detection of an arc often leads to a hard system shutdown that can only be restarted by a physical reset. Therefore, it is costly to service systems that have detected an arc. This creates a challenging problem for system designers – how to minimize the chance of false detection while ensuring that valid arcs are always detected. It is ideal to have an arc-detect system that allows system designers to optimize the balance between arc detection accuracy and false detect prevention.

TI's RD-195 reference design is a DC arc detection solution that reliably detects arcs and alerts the system, reducing chances of fires caused by arcing. The solution is fully programmable, providing maximum flexibility for system integration and false detection optimization. It is accompanied by an easy-to-use GUI, enabling rapid alteration of detection parameters.
