Texas Instruments established the DLP Products division in 1993 to unleash the potential of Dr. Larry Hornbeck's vision for an all-digital optical device that would enable light to be manipulated with previously unimaginable accuracy and speed.

TI DLP® Products creates display and sensing products that empower electronics manufacturers, scientists, and engineers to innovate light-steering applications ranging from digital cinema and home entertainment to optical networking and DNA synthesis.

  • 1987: Dr. Larry Hornbeck invents digital micromirror device (DMD), known as the DLP chip
  • 1996: First commercial DLP projector system ships; enables first ultra-portable 6lb projector
  • 1998: DLP Products receives first Emmy® Award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development (DLP Cinema®)
  • 2004: DLP Products becomes #1 supplier of MEMS technology worldwide
  • 2009: Consumer devices begin to ship worldwide featuring DLP® Pico™ technology
  • 2012: New DLP development kit launches letting developers embed the DLP chip into nontraditional markets
  • 2013: DLP Products takes display to the automobile with a vision for a digital console and Head-Up Display (HUD)
  • 2014: DLP Cinema products now in over 118,000 theatre screens worldwide
  • 2015: First automotive-qualified DLP chipset for head-up display (HUD) applications
  • 2015: Dr. Hornbeck receives the 2014 Scientific and Technical Academy Award® of Merit (Oscar® statuette) for the invention of the digital micromirror device (DMD) technology as used in DLP Cinema® projection
