Texas Instruments established the DLP products division in 1993 to unleash the potential of one scientist's vision for an all-digital optical device that would enable light to be manipulated with previously unimaginable accuracy and speed.

Today, Dr. Larry Hornbeck has 34 patents related to DMD technology. And the DLP products team is shaping the digital future with the same dedication to excellence that's made Texas Instruments a world leader in digital signal processing.

1987: Dr. Larry Hornbeck invents digital micromirror device (DMD), known as the DLP chip

1996: First commercial DLP projector system ships; enables first ultra portable 6lb projector

1998: DLP Products receives first Emmy® Award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development (DLP Cinema®)

2004: DLP Products becomes #1 supplier of MEMS technology worldwide and to current date have shipped more than 40 million DLP chipsets

2009: Consumer devices begin to ship worldwide featuring DLP® Pico™ projectors

2012: New DLP development kit launches letting developers to embed the DLP chip into nontraditional markets

2013: DLP Products takes display to the automobile with a vision for a digital console and Head-Up Display (HUD)

2014: DLP Cinema products now in over 118,000 theatre screens worldwide.
