The MSP430 Value Line continues to expand its portfolio with the introduction of the MSP430G2xx3 series. Maintaining low cost and ultra-low power, the G2xx3 series enables capacitive touch applications and integrates communication peripherals such as UART, SPI and I2C.

Capacitive Touch Sense IOs

The G2xx2 and upcoming G2xx3 families feature an innovative capacitive touch sense IO design. Additional circuits are added to regular GPIO modules to generate the pin oscillation, eliminating external components. Advantages to the designer using this include:

  • No external components to create the oscillation
  • The cap can be connected directly
  • No need for external MUXes to allow multiple pads
  • Each pad can directly serve as a cap sense input
  • Hysteresis of ~0.7v – robust operation

Bill Of materials at the system level is reduced (e.g. reduced passives, up to a few cents each) leading to a lower system cost.
