MSP430 for Utility Metering Applications
Sub-metering applications such as smart plugs and appliance energy meters enable consumers to understand and control their energy usage patterns. Other sub-metering applications such as server power meters help IT departments optimize power consumption of server farms. This white paper discusses features and benefits of energy measurement ICs such as the MSP430AFE2xx in these applications. Also, this app note details the implementation of a single-phase electronic watt-hour meter using the AFE2xx.
Designed specifically for the demands of smart grid applications, TI's MSP430 microcontroller is the perfect combination of ultra-low-power and high performance analog integration. MSP430 offers devices for water, gas and one to three-phase electricity metering, as well as radio frequency wireless interfaces for automated meter reading (AMR). The development ecosystem is optimized to support quick ramp to production thru access to various application notes, software suites and evaluation modules.

Electricity Metering
An advanced electronic electricity meter requires an MCU that offers precise voltage and current conversion over a wide dynamic range, programmable Flash, non-volatile storage, real-time clock function, flexible display and AMR-enabled communications features. The MSP430 family of electricity metering devices was designed for these demands. The family offers up to seven 16-bit independent sigma-delta converters and programmable gain amplifiers along with specific integrated e-metering modules such as the ESP engine and 32x32 hardware multiplier allowing for easy, high performance energy metering calculations.
