Hot Swap and eFuse (Electronic Fuse) provide circuit protection by limiting inrush current and shutting off power to the load during a fault. Most Hot Swap controllers sense and control the current across a resistor by regulating the gate of a MOSFET. TI eFuses perform a similar function, but integrate the FET and the sense element. These devices are often used in:

Many of TI's Hot Swap controllers offer additional FET protection by reducing the current limit at higher VDS to ensure that the MOSFET is within its safe operating area (Figure 1). This second layer of protection makes the Hot Swap solution more robust. Additional features may include: Under and Over Voltage (UV/OV) Protection, Analog or I2C/PMBus Control and Monitoring, Fault and Warning Flags, and Integrated ORing Control.
