Protection Relays

Protection relays (also called intelligent electronic devices, IEDs) monitor and analyze process parameters and make quick decisions to protect grid equipment. Low-latency real-time communication is required for connecting to switchyard equipment, and reliable upstream communication is needed to transmit data to higher layers of SCADA control. Protection relays also must quickly process parameters such as IEC61850 sampled values (SV). TI's Sitara processors provide single chip, cost-optimized solutions for protection relays.

Industrial Ethernet Switches

Industrial Ethernet switches in the power grid require high reliability, high security, and a large number of Ethernet connections. Increasing amounts of data need to be transported over the wide area network as more grid equipment becomes Ethernet-based. This creates a need for high performance, high-reliability Ethernet switches; TI's Sitara portfolio scales from entry-level to high-end solutions with common software and security solutions across the family.

Merging Units

Merging units take in process data from switchyard equipment over serial-based connections and send out the information over Ethernet networks for protection relays and other Ethernet-based relay room equipment. Merging units can contain a large number of signal processing cards in addition to a front end; the high number of processing units requires low power consumption to keep designs fanless.
