Sitara AM335x processor-based BeagleBone Green Wireless

SeeedStudio BeagleBone Green Wireless is a joint effort by BeagleBoard.org and Seeed Studio. Based on the open-source hardware design of BeagleBone Black, the newest BBGW has added two Grove connectors, making it easier to connect to the large family of Grove sensors. It is the first Wi-Fi + Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) board from BeagleBone community. Boot Linux in under 10 seconds and get started on development in less than 5 minutes with just a single USB cable.

Sitara AM335x processor-based BeagleBone Black

BeagleBone Black is a low-cost, community-supported development platform for ARM® Cortex®-A8 processor developers and hobbyists. Boot Linux in under 10-seconds and get started on Sitara AM335x processor development in less than five minutes with just a single USB cable. BeagleBone Black ships with the Debian GNU/Linux in onboard FLASH to start evaluation and development. Many other Linux distributions and operating systems are also supported on BeagleBone Black including Ubuntu, Android and Fedora. BeagleBone Black's capabilities can be extended using plug-in boards called "capes" that can be plugged into BeagleBone Black's two 46-pin dual-row expansion headers. Wireless Connectivity Cape for BeagleBone Black solution

TI and Element14 have teamed up to create a combo Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee® and NFC cape for the BeagleBone Black. Sitara AM335x evaluation module

The Sitara AM335x evaluation module (EVM) enables developers to immediately start evaluating the Sitara AM335x processor family (AM3352, AM3354, AM3356, AM3358) and begin building applications such as portable navigation, portable gaming, home/building automation and others. Plug in the WiLink 8 COM8 module and get started developing on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Smart applications today!

The WL1835MODCOM8 is one of the two evaluation boards for the TI WiLink 8 combo module family. For designs requiring performance in the 5 GHz band and extended temperature range, see the WL1837MODCOM8I.

The WL1835MODCOM8 Kit for Sitara EVMs easily enables customers to add Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® (WL183x module only) to embedded applications based on TI's Sitara microprocessors. TI's WiLink 8 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth modules are pre-certified and offer high throughput and extended range along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth coexistence (WL183x modules only) in a power-optimized design. Drivers for the Linux and Android high-level operating systems (HLOSs) are available free of charge from TI for the Sitara AM335x microprocessor (Linux and Android version restrictions apply).

Sitara AM572x evaluation module

The Sitara AM572x evaluation module (EVM) provides a platform to quickly start evaluation of Sitara AM57x processors (AM5728AM5726AM5718) and accelerate development for HMI, machine vision, networking, medical imaging and many other industrial applications. It is a development platform based on the dual ARM® Cortex® -A15, dual C66x digital signal processor (DSP) that is integrated with tons of connectivity such as PCIe, SATA, HDMI, USB 3.0/2.0, Dual Gigabit Ethernet, and more. The Sitara AM572x EVM also integrates video and 3D/2D graphics acceleration, as well as a quad-core programmable real-time unit (PRU) and dual ARM Cortex-M4 cores. WiLink 8 Wi-Fi® Driver for Linux OS

NOTE: WiLink 8 drivers are on the Linux® mainline kernel. TI platforms come with an out-of-box experience using the Processor SDK. The NLCP package is relevant for platforms that are not based on the Processor SDK or the Linux mainline kernel.

The NLCP package contains the install package, pre-compiled object and source of the TI Linux open-source Wi-Fi image to easily upgrade the default Linux based PROCESSOR-SDK-AMXXXX release with the TI WiLink family NLCP Wi-Fi® driver. The software is built with Linaro GCC and can be added to Linux SDKs that use similar toolchain on other platforms.

The WAPI package provides the WPA Supplicant patch to support WAPI security protocol.

WiLink 8 device MCP proprietary Wi-Fi driver for non-Linux OS

NOTE:The MCP package is not relevant for Linux-based platforms. For more information on drivers for Linux-based platforms, see the NLCP release.

The MCP package contains the install package, pre-compiled object and source of the proprietary Wi-Fi Driver - QNX, Nucleus, WinCE as well as ThreadX, FreeRTOS, µC, MQX ,RTX and uITRON RTOS baseline image to easily integrate the TI WiLink Wi-Fi drivers. WiLink™ 8 Wi-Fi mesh solution

The WiLink™ 8 mesh solution is based on the 802.11s Wi-Fi mesh topology enabling coverage extension without the need for additional equipment or wiring- a superior solution for audio, industrial and building automation.

In a traditional Wi-Fi setup, if a device is too far from the access point, it won’t be able to connect to the network. On a Wi-Fi mesh network, connectivity isn’t a problem! Achieve extended range by using mesh topology to provide connectivity to devices outside of the access point’s reach without adding additional infrastructure. Each device communicates with one another to form an inter-connected mesh, where traffic is relayed through multiple nodes to the destination. To reduce congestion, traffic on the mesh stays within the mesh, there is no need for the access point.

Our self-healing network and optimized path selection algorithm provides robust network reliability. The mesh open source software package is compatible with any WiLink 8 module, free to download and requires only a network reconfiguration making transitioning to a Wi-Fi mesh topology easy.

Along with the mesh software package, we also have the WiLink™ Mesh Visualization Tool for WL18XX Modules which is a Microsoft® Windows®-based software tool used for exploring and displaying mesh networks.

WiLink 8 Linux Bluetooth® Add-On

This package contains the install package, pre-compiled object and source of the TI Bluetooth stack and platform manager to easily upgrade the default Linux-based PROCESSOR-SDK binary on a Sitara™ AM57x evaluation module (EVM), Sitara AM437x EVM, Sitara AM335x EVM or BeagleBone. The software was built with Linaro GCC and can be added to Linux SDKs that use similar toolchain on other platforms. For licensing information, release notes and profiles supported, please download the package.

WiLink 8 Bluetooth® service pack

The Bluetooth service pack is composed of the following four files:

  • BTS file (TIInit_11.8.32.bts) - required
  • ILI file (TIInit_11.8.32.ili) - For debug FW only
  • XML (TIInit_11.8.32.xml) - For debug FW only
  • Release notes document
  • License agreement

The BTS file is used for Bluetooth firmware initialization.
The ILI file is used to decode the Bluetooth firmware logger. The XML file is used by the HCITester application to display the BTS in a user friendly manner. For more information on the firmware logger and HCITester software, see TI wireless tools (link to section here).

WiLink 8 wireless tools for WL18XX modules

Low system power

WiLink 8 devices are able to achieve low system power consumption by using two features:

ELP mode is enabled by default and allows the AP or station to go to sleep between beacons, saving several mA of power consumption.

Wake on Wireless LAN enables the host processor to go to sleep while the WiLink 8 module is awake and listening for "magic packets," which are fully configurable. Once the WiLink 8 module receives the packets, it wakes up the host processor using an interrupt pin.

TX/RX testing

Production line tests (PLT) are used at the production line after designing the board with the WiLink 8 device. This is to sanity check that the board works properly and detect any major design issues and manufacturing defects.

Audio demo kit with 802.11s mesh networking

TI's WiLink 8 audio demo kit is designed to demonstrate an audio solution offered by Texas Instruments in partnership with StreamUnlimited (SU). This kit includes three (3) battery powered Sitara processor-based BeagleBone Black boards and StreamUnlimited multi-room WL1837MOD cape that feature 802.11s (mesh) support, ultra-precise audio synchronization, multi-room features, BT (A2DP) music distribution (over mesh / AP), support for online music services, UPnP and more. The design is also Apple Airplay® certifiable and supports Google Cast audio.

Wi-Fi demos

This demo shows how to configure the WiLink 8 module for station mode and connect to a non-secured AP using IW commands.

Connect to secure AP using WPA_supplicant

This demo shows you how to configure the WiLink 8 module for station mode to connect to a Wi-Fi network that supports arbitrary security modes. The configuration commands can be executed using a serial communication program while connected to the platform's serial port.

Portable wireless gateway

This demo allows users to connect a mobile device to access the Internet through a WiLink 8 device, which is connected to the Internet through their home AP. This shows the multi-role capabilities of WiLink 8 devices and also provides instructions for using iPerf to measure throughput in this scenario.

Wi-Fi/Bluetooth coexistence demo: Wi-Fi video + Bluetooth A2DP audio

This demo will show the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth coexistence on WiLink 8 devices by configuring the Wi-Fi portion to STA/AP traffic while audio is streaming through the Bluetooth interface (A2DP).

Configurable low-power Wi-Fi

WiLink 8 devices are capable of achieving low system power through the use of Wake on Wireless LAN. This feature enables the host processor to go to sleep while the WiLink 8 module is listening for "magic packets." The goal of this demo is to wake up the Sitara processor from suspend mode based on a pre-defined configurable wake up event. In this case, we specify that only the magic packets targeting the MAC address of the platform can wake it up.
