Electricity Metering - Microcontroller Selection Tool
Introducing the MSP430AFE2xx series - Industry's first programmable metrology devices for low-cost analog front-end solutions
Focusing on metering and smart grid applications, TI announces the MSP430AFE2xx series of metrology analog-front end (AFE) ultra-low-power 16-bit microcontrollers. Part of TI's leading embedded processing portfolio, the low-cost MSP430AFE series offers the industry's first programmable single-phase metrology devices supported with multiple communication interfaces. The microcontrollers enable system partitioning in metering applications, such as electricity meters, home automation, sub-metering and energy saving systems, which allows flexible, stand-alone, high-quality measurement. The MSP430AFE series is based on a 16-bit RISC architecture with a system frequency of 12MHz, offering 3X the system speed over competing parts to drive increased functionality. The microcontroller achieves less than 0.1 percent error in energy accuracy over a wide dynamic range of 2400:1, enabled by three independent 24-bit Sigma-delta converters supporting anti-tamper. MSP430FE42x2 MCUs Reduce Component Count for Electricity
Metering - By integrating an ESP energy calculation engine
with 2x16-bit sigma-delta ADCs, 128 segment LCD driver, up to 32 KB
of flash memory and 1KB of RAM, the MSP430FE42x2 series of ultra-low
power MCUs enable a four to one reduction in system components. This
high integration makes it an ideal solution for single-phase
metering applications. |

Electricity Metering
An advanced electronic electricity meter requires an MCU that offers
precise voltage and current conversion over a wide dynamic range,
programmable Flash, non-volatile storage, real-time clock function,
flexible display and AMR-enabled communications features. The MSP430
family of electricity metering devices was designed for these demands. The
family offers up to seven 16-bit independent sigma-delta converters and
programmable gain amplifiers along with specific integrated e-metering
modules such as the ESP engine and 32x32 hardware multiplier allowing for
easy, high performance energy metering calculations.

Automated Meter Reading
Essentially like a two-way remote control, an electronic meter with AMR
solution reads billing information and performs meter diagnostics
automatically and communicates that information either wirelessly or over
existing power lines back to the utility. MSP430's versatile portfolio of
integrated communication modules allows for easy AMR-enabled
solutions.
