Compatibility

Is the PS-6155 software Windows 95 compatible?

Yes. Although the PS-6155 software is a 16-bit application, Windows 95 can manage 16-bit applications as well as 32-bit applications.

Can I transfer my old files to my new unit?

New PS-6155 software (Version 2.0): If you are upgrading from PS-6155 version 1.X to version 2.0, you can simply open your PS-6155 version 1.X .PSD file in version 2.0 of the PS-6155 software. The version 1.X .PSD file will be automatically upgraded to the version 2.0 standard. Be aware that you will no longer be able to use the .PSD file with PS-6155 version 1.X software after conversion to the 2.0 standard.

New organizer: If you have purchased a new organizer and wish to copy the data from your old organizer, you can do so if you have the PS-6155 software and the dock station. Connect the new organizer to the dock station, open the PS-6155 software, and click Link, Send.

TImeRunner files: If you have TImeRunner (.TIL) PC files, you can import them into a PS-6155 file. You can either create a new file for the TImeRunner entries, or import the TImeRunner entries into a file that already contains entries, adding the TImeRunner entries to the entries in the PS-6155 file.

Before importing a file of TImeRunner entries into the PS-6155 software, you must create the .TIL file using either the PS-9020 or IS-8150 Link software.

Note: When you import a TImeRunner file, only the entries are imported. None of the option settings (password, address list names or defaults, or keywords) are imported.

To import the TImeRunner entries:
1. Open or create a file into which you want to import the TImeRunner entries. The file must be a .PSD file.
2. From the File menu, select Import, and then select TImeRunner File (TIL). The Import TImeRunner File window is displayed.
3. Select the .TIL file you want to import (as you would normally in a Windows program). After you select the file, the import process begins. A progress indicator bar reports the import status.
4. When the import is complete, a message is displayed to let you know how many entries were imported. Click OK.

Note: Conflict resolution is not supported for the importing of TImeRunner files. As a result, you may have duplicate entries if you import a TImeRunner file into an existing file.

Can I use my electronic organizer with PC organizer software other than the PS-6155?

Yes. If you are using a PC program such as Lotus Organizer, Day Runner, TImeRunner, Schedule +, Act, Sidekick, Now Up-to-Date, Ascend, or Maximizer, you can coordinate your PC and organizer files using the PS-6155 Connectivity Kit. To do this, you will have to export your non-TI software to a .CSV file and then import the .CSV file into the PS-6155.

Synchronization and Transmission Problems

What does synchronize mean? How does synchronization work?

Synchronized personal organizer units have the ability to simultaneously update the entries on the organizer and the PC, making both files identical.

If you have a PS-6760Si, a PS-6860Si, or a PS-6960Si, you can synchronize the files on your organizer and your PC in one step. When you choose the Synchronize command, the PS-6155 software determines if PC and organizer entries have been changed in some way (for example, additions, deletions, or modifications), and updates the PC and/or organizer entries accordingly. After synchronization is completed, no difference exists between the entries on the PC and the entries on the organizer.

What is the difference between synchronized and non-synchronized units?

With synchronized organizers you can update the contents of organizer memory and its corresponding PC-resident file with one command. The software merges the two files, so that any additions, deletions, or modifications made to either file are updated in both files.

Although you can update the PC and organizer files on a non-synchronized organizer, it requires a series of actions.

How do I update the PC and organizer files if I have a non-synchronized unit?

warningWARNING: It is very important that you complete the steps below in the correct order. If you have a blank PC file, for example, and you send entries to the organizer first, you will erase the entries on the organizer since the PC file will be copied over the organizer file.

To update the two files for a non-synchronized organizer:
1. Copy organizer entries to the PC file. (Click on Link, Receive.)
If a conflict occurs between .PSD entries and corresponding organizer entries, you can resolve the conflict by selecting an option in the dialog box that appears.
2. On the PC, delete any unwanted entries.
3. On the PC, update Organizer Options if desired. (Click on Category, Organizer Options.)
4. Send all categories of entries to the organizer. (Click on Link, Send.)
The PC file is now synchronized with the organizer's memory.

Why won't my unit synchronize?

You must have a synchronized organizer model (models PS-6760Si, PS-6860Si, and PS-6960Si). If you have one of these models and are unable to synchronize your organizer with your PC, there is probably a communication problem between the organizer and the PC.

To resolve the problem, ensure that:
The PS-6155 cable is properly connected to the PC's serial port.
The organizer is properly seated in the dock-station cradle.
The correct organizer model is selected on the Connection window. (Click on Setup, then click on Connection...)
The correct serial port (COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4) is selected on the Connection window. (Click on Setup, then Connection...)
You have previously set the Date and Time on the organizer by choosing Options, 4 (Set Date and Time). Otherwise, the organizer will not turn on automatically.
You have not locked the organizer with a password. If the organizer is locked, unlock it by choosing Options, 2 (Lock/Unlock the Unit) and following on-screen instructions.
The organizer is not in calculator or edit mode.
A .PSD file that corresponds to the current organizer memory is open on the PC.

After checking these items, try again. Refer to the online help for additional assistance.

Note: The time required for synchronization is dependent on the number of new, modified, or deleted entries to be handled. As a result, synchronizing may take a few seconds to several minutes.

Can I synchronize certain categories?

The current release of the PS-6155 software does not allow synchronization of selected categories of information. The entire memory of the organizer is synchronized with its corresponding PC-resident file.

I am receiving a transmission error. What should I do first?

Make sure your system meets the requirements for the PS-6155 software.
Make sure the correct Organizer Model and Serial Port (COM port) are selected in the PS-6155 software (under Setup, Connection).
Make sure the COM port you are using does not have a conflict with another device (an internal modem, for example).
Look for an IRQ conflict with another device such as a serial mouse or an internal modem.
If you use a notebook computer, make sure the port you are using is turned on. (For computers running Windows 95, you can check this by clicking on Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, System, then looking at the properties for the COM ports.)
Try turning off your notebook's power management before you attempt to use the 6155 Connectivity Kit. The battery conservation mechanisms often create difficulties.
Check the Startup group to see if any additional programs are being loaded when Windows starts that might interfere with serial communication (the Microsoft Office toolbar, for example). If you have numerous items in your Startup group, we recommend copying them to a temporary location, clearing the Startup group, and rebooting to see if this clears your transmission error.

To check the Startup group:

Windows 95: Click StartMenu, Programs, Startup.
Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups: Double-click Program Manager, Startup.

See if another serial device (an external modem, for example) will work on the serial port you are trying to use.
Make sure the COM driver you are using is the standard driver: COMM.DRV. (Check your Windows\System folder.)

My transmission reaches a certain percentage complete and then displays a transmission error. What should I do?

This could be happening because the data is being transferred too quickly, causing a "back-up" in the serial port. There are several things you can do to try to eliminate this.

Eliminate any applications that may be distracting the processor from the communication task. (Close all other applications, and disable screen savers and virus scanners.)
Adjust the Transmit Buffer.
- In Windows 3.1, 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups 3.11, disable the entire Transmit Buffer.
Warning WARNING: We do not recommend that you try this unless you are experienced in making changes to your system files (such as the SYSTEM.INI). If you do attempt this change, make a backup copy of the file before you begin.
To disable the buffer:
Add COMXFIFO=0 to the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file (substitute the number of the COM port you are using for X in COMXFIFO). When you finish, you can enable the buffer again by returning the setting to COMXFIFO=1.
If you have Windows for Workgroups 3.11, you can also set the size of the transmit buffer by adding COMXTXFIFO=12 (substituting the the number of the COM port you are using for the first X) or adjust the receive buffer by adding COMXRXFIFO=8 (substituting the number of the COM port you are using for the first X). You generally should adjust only the transmit buffer.
-In Windows 95, adjust the Transmit Buffer by following these steps:
  1. Click on Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel.
  2. From the Control Panel, click on the System icon.
  3. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  4. Double-click on the Ports section, if necessary, and then double-click on the COM port you are using.
  5. Click on the Port Settings tab, then click on the Advanced button at the bottom of the dialog box.
  6. Move the Transmit Buffer selector all the way to Low, and move the Receive Buffer selector to High.

I am receiving an Internal Error message? What should I do?

Internal Error messages indicate that there may be a problem with one or more of the helper files that the PS-6155 software requires to run. Other software may have overwritten these files with a different version, or they may not be installed in the correct directory. You can usually eliminate this problem by closing all applications and reinstalling the PS-6155 software. In Windows 95, you should install the software from Safe Mode.

If you are still having difficulty and would like a listing of the helper files (with date, size, and location), please contact Customer Support. For prompt assistance, please be prepared to provide Customer Support with the Internal Error you are receiving and your PS-6155 software version.

When the display is no longer visible, the memory is cleared and you may reinsert the batteries. Your password and all other data have been erased.

INDIGLO®

What is INDIGLO®?

INDIGLO® night-light is a feature on some TI organizers that lets you see the display information in low light conditions. INDIGLO® night-light is activated by pushing a button on the organizer. It will stay on for a few seconds and then turn off.

Why won't INDIGLO® night-light stay on? Why does it shut off so fast?

In order to conserve battery power, INDIGLO® night-light turns off after a few seconds.

System Requirements

What are system requirements?

System requirements are conditions that your PC hardware and software components must meet or exceed in order for your TI organizer and PC link software to be able to work with your PC. Hardware and software requirements normally indicate the type of platform required (for example, IBM PC), the operating system (for example, Windows 95), central processing unit (80386 or higher), graphics card (VGA or better), system (RAM) memory (4 MB available, 8 MB recommended), available hard drive space, type of installation drive, type of pointing device (mouse), and communication port configuration.

PS-6155 Connectivity Kit

If I have the PS-6155, what advantage will upgrading to the new Version 2.0 software provide?

The primary advantage is the addition of the synchronization feature. (Synchronization will be important to you if you have one of these models: PS-6760Si, PS-6860Si, or PS-6960Si.) Using synchronization, you can make changes to your PC or organizer entries, and, with just a click on the synchronize button sychronization, make the PC and organizer files identical.

The Version 2.0 software also includes:

    • a new, easy-to-use toolbar.
    • the ability to exclude duplicate entries if you are using a non-synchronized organizer.
    • automatic loading of the last file you edited when you open the software program.

What do I need to know if I have an internal modem?

In most cases your use of the PS-6155 software should not affect your internal modem. If you experience communication problems between the PC and the organizer and you change settings for your Communications Port (such as the Receive Buffer rate and Transmit Buffer rate), these changes could affect the performance of an internal or external modem, so be sure to return to your original setup after you use the PS-6155 software.

If I purchase a new organizer, do I have to purchase a new dock station?

No. Your old dock station should work with a new organizer. If you upgrade to Version 2.0 of the PS-6155 software, you will still be able to use the same dock station. See the PC Connectivity Kit page at http://www.ti.com/organizers/docs/ps6155.htm to download the new software.

What is the difference between a COM port and a serial port?

A serial port and a COM port, while closely related, are not the same. A serial port is a physical connection on the computer where a serial communications device, such as the PS-6155 dock station or a modem, attaches to the computer. Most computers have several serial ports (for the mouse and modem) and one parallel port (for the printer).

Serial communication involves the transmission of data one bit at a time, while information within the computer is transmitted using parallel communication, in which several bits of data are transmitted simultaneously. A COM port is an address in memory that Windows uses to access a serial port. In order to establish successful serial communication, the COM port address must match the address used by the serial port. When the addresses match, then there should be no communication problem, but if you have the PS-6155 set up to use a COM port that has no physical serial port associated with it, problems can occur. If you are experiencing problems with your computer's current configuration, please contact the manufacturer of your computer for assistance in reconfiguring your computer.

Will the software work with Windows NT or other operating systems?

Although the PS-6155 software is a 16-bit system, it can be used on machines that are running Windows 95, since Windows 95 can handle both 16- and 32-bit applications. The current release of the PS-6155 software does not run on Windows NT.

What is the file format for PSD file?

A .PSD file is a PC database file. It contains organizer entries that you create using the PS-6155 software, receive from the organizer, or import from a PIM (personal information manager) or other database software. It can contain all of the elements of an organizer file.

To turn power management off:

  1. From the Start Menu, click on Settings, Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel dialog box, click on the Power icon.
  3. In the Power Properties dialog box, click on the Power Management drop-down list and select Off.
  4. Click on OK.

To start the machine in safe mode:

  1. Click on the Start Menu, then click on Shut Down.
  2. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart the computer and click on Yes.
  3. As the computer goes through the start up process, watch for the prompt "Now starting Windows 95." When you see this, press the F8 key. The computer will display a menu for various system modes.
  4. Select the Safe Mode option, then allow the computer to finish the reboot process. After Windows reopens, install the software, then reboot the machine in the normal manner.

IRQs (Interrupt Requests):

IRQs (Interrupt Requests) are settings that help manage the various devices attached to your computer. Each device has an assigned signal setting that it uses for communication with the computer's processor.

To view IRQ listings on PC running operating systems other than Windows 95:

  1. Go to a DOS prompt and start MSD.
  2. In the MSD application, select IRQ (Q).
  3. Check the list of assignments for conflicts.
To view IRQ listings on Windows 95 machines:
  1. Right click on the My Computer icon to display the menu.
  2. Click on Properties.
  3. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  4. Double-click on Computer (or click on Computer, then click on Properties).
  5. Click on the Interrupt Request button if it is not already selected.
  6. Check the list of assignments for conflicts.
You should be aware that there is usually a built-in conflict between COM ports 1 and 3 and COM ports 2 and 4 (if they exist). Since you will not usually be using both ports at the same time, COM 1 and COM 3 are normally assigned the same IRQ setting.

You could also check to be sure that your internal modem, for example, is not using the same COM port as your connectivity software. If so, try switching to a different COM port.
