Feature: TI Readies EPC Gen 2 Tag Based on Ratification of EPCglobal Standard

Texas Instruments is getting ready to introduce its next generation Electronic Product Code™ (EPC) Generation 2 tag based on the recently ratified EPCglobal Inc.™ specification. TI is planning on having samples of its Gen 2 tags in Q2 2005, and is preparing to ramp to volume production in Q3 2005. The company will supply Gen 2 chips, straps and inlays to the market.

The company has been developing an EPC Gen 2 UHF RFID solution over the past year in cooperation with the EPCglobal Inc. standards body. This new UHF RFID standard is broadly supported by users and manufacturers within the RFID industry and will facilitate the widespread deployment of EPC RFID technology in the retail supply chain. TI's focus is to support the Gen 2 infrastructure, which includes label converters, equipment providers and systems integrators, with low-cost, high-performance, standards-based UHF products to facilitate rapid integration and interoperability. The major benefits of Gen 2 tags over EPCglobal Class 0 and Class 1 specifications include global interoperability, tag throughput that is three to 10 times faster, multiple read/write capability, improved security through better password protection, and the ability to operate in dense reader environments.

As part of the EPCglobal standards development process, TI participated in the Gen 2 artifact demonstration tests conducted by EPCglobal Inc. on December 2. The object of the tests was to show the tag artifacts meet users' requirements and comply with the main elements of the standard. Technical characteristics tested included communication protocol exchanges, anti-collision algorithms, and random number generation.

For more than 15 years, TI has applied its manufacturing prowess and six sigma engineering quality process to achieve high-volume tag production, including high-frequency (HF) RFID inlays, that meet the demanding yield and reliability needs of the label conversion market, and ultimately end-users who will apply the technology in the retail supply chain. TI will use its experience to serve the volume demands of its customers for next-generation EPC UHF Gen 2 products.

Mobile Aspects Introduces One System of CARE™

Team Tag-it™ member Mobile Aspects, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Penn., recently launched its One System of CARE™, an integrated suite of RFID hardware and software solutions that enable healthcare providers to automatically track supplies, drugs, assets, and patient status in real-time for safer and more efficient patient care. The One System of CARE™, featuring TI's ISO 15693 13.56 MHz Tag-it™ smart labels and TI-RFid readers, can be integrated seamlessly into a hospital's existing information management systems, such as billing, electronic medical records, and ADT systems. The solution incorporates Mobile Aspect's iRIS™ inventory management system, the RFID-enabled Anesthesia Workstation and Drug Delivery Workstation, and the Patient and Asset tracking systems.

Using RFID technology, Mobile Aspects' system offers healthcare providers accurate, reliable, real-time data, for reporting, searching and patient/drug alerts. Because the solution streamlines clinical and administrative processes, hospitals no longer need to rely on clinicians to remember to complete myriad manual compliance tasks. One System of CARE™ automatically tracks patient status, product usage, and drug usage, which enables healthcare providers to deliver safer patient care, while realizing significantly improved inventory management and accurate billing. From one web-based interface, doctors and nurses can receive real-time data and evaluate any supply, drug, asset, or patient anytime, anywhere.

“One System of CARE™ provides a higher quality of care and safety for patients, while increasing productivity and significantly reducing costs for healthcare providers,” said Suneil Mandava, president and CEO of Mobile Aspects. “Hospitals can now find all of their RFID solutions within one integrated system. With implementation of all or parts of One System of CARE™, hospitals can realize a return on investment in less than one year if purchased, and within the first month of use if the system is leased.”

The system is installed in several of the top 15 hospitals throughout North America. For more information on the One System of CARE™, visit Mobile Aspects at http://www.mobileaspects.com or contact Suneil Mandava at 412-325-1690 or smandava@mobileaspects.com.
