))) 3M Joins Texas Instruments RFid Systems to Demonstrate RFID Technology at Frontline Solutions’ Supply Chain Week 2002

))) DALLAS, TX (September 24, 2002)

The 3M Safety and Security Systems Division is joining Texas Instruments Radio Frequency Identification (TI-RFid™) Systems at Frontline Solutions’ Supply Chain Week 2002 to show a range of RFID solutions for item tracking. At TI’s booth #1217, 3M is demonstrating its line of RFID Smart Solutions, which includes the 3M™ Smart Tag, the 3M™ Smart Handheld, the 3M™ Smart Pad, and the 3M™ Smart Reader.

3M’s RFID Smart Solutions are used to identify, track and manage items in environments such as legal, accounting, insurance, mortgage, and banking, where the ability to locate files or specific documents is integral to business operations. RFID technology improves the management of documents, enhancing productivity, so that items can be located more quickly and workflow can be easily tracked.

The 3M Smart Tag incorporates TI’s Tag-it™ smart label inlays in a paper-thin label that can easily be attached to any item. 3M has achieved world-class levels of efficiency in converting TI’s RFID inlays to labels. 3M is also showing its small-format mid-range reader, the 3M Smart Reader, which is integrated in the 3M Smart Handheld and 3M Smart Pad. The Smart Reader was developed in a smaller form factor required for the ergonomically-designed, cordless Smart Handheld Assistant device, which will be available in the first quarter of 2003. The 3M Smart Pad is a new flat reader device designed to sit on a desk or at a work station to program tags, check items in or out, track file locations, and expedite workflow. The Smart Pad, currently in its Beta version, will be available in 2003.

“We’re seeing a growing need for item-level tracking in a range of professional service environments,” said Tim Kryzer, business development manager for 3M RFID Smart Solutions. “Whether it’s being used to track and manage the flow of books, documents, files, tapes, or items in the supply chain, RFID technology allows customers to work more efficiently, manage projects more effectively, and have quicker access to more accurate information.”

As a long-standing member of TI’s Team Tag-it™ Program, a partnership of industry-leading companies dedicated to accelerating the development and adoption of RFID smart label solutions, 3M began utilizing TI-RFid™ technology as a component of its Digital Materials Flow Management solution designed to optimize the handling, processing, and security of materials as they are moved throughout a library. 3M Library Systems currently has more than 60 libraries worldwide using TI-RFid™ technology, 25 of which have been implemented in 2002.
