FPL THERMAL IMPEDANCE FILE UPDATED 08-07-1991 THE THERMAL IMPEDANCE (K-FACTOR) OF A PACKAGE IS DEFINED AS THE INCREASE IN JUNCTION TEMPERATURE ABOVE THE AMBIENT DUE TO THE POWER DISSAPATED BY THE DEVICE, AND IS MEASURED IN DEGREES CELCIUS PER WATT (OC/W). THERE ARE TWO MEASUREMENTS USED TO DESCRIBE THE THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A PACKAGE. OJA (THETA JA) - THE THERMAL IMPEDANCE FROM THE IC BAR JUNCTION TO A STILL AIR AMBIENT WITH THE PACKAGE NORMALLY MOUNTED IN A SOCKET. THE SOCKET SHOULD BE NOTED AS TO MANUFACTURER, TYPE, ETC. FOR COMPARISON. OJC (THETA JC) - THE PACKAGE IMPEDANCE FROM THE IC BAR JUNCTION TO THE PACKAGE EXTERNAL CASE, USING CIRCULATING FREON TF TO SIMULATE AN INFINITE HEAT SINK. THE TECHNIQUE EMPHASIZES THE THERMAL IMPEDANCE OF THE PACKAGE RATHER THAN A DEVICE SINCE A SPECIAL K-BAR IS USED WITH A TRANSISTOR (TEMPERATURE SENSITIVE ELEMENT) LOCATED IN THE CENTER AND SURROUNDED BY EQUALLY DISTRIBUTED RESISTORS FOR UNIFORM POWER DISSIPATION.... THE PROCEDURES USED FOR MAKING THERMAL IMPEDANCE MEASUREMENTS ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1) A PACKAGE IS PLACED IN THE STILL AIR CHAMBER AT AMBIENT TEMPERATURE WHERE VBE1 IS MEASURED... POWER IS THEN APPLIED TO THE RESISTORS AND VBE2 IS MEASURED. THIS GIVES THE DATA POINTS NEEDED TO EVALUATE OJA. 2) FOR OJC, THE TESTS ARE SIMILAR, BUT THE PACKAGE IS PLACED IN A BATH OF MOVING FREON TF. 3) TO CALCULATE THE ACTUAL VALUES, A VBE - TEMPERATURE CORRELATION IS REQUIRED. THE PACKAGE IS PLACED IN AN OVEN AT APPROXIMATELY 90C WITHOUT POWER APPLIED AND VBE3 MEASURED. ALL OF THESE MEASUREMENTS ARE MADE AFTER A STABILIZATION PERIOD OF APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES.
