Texas Instruments TMS320C5000™ DSPs Empower Next Generation Products At Consumer Electronics Show

Audio, Communications and Imaging Products Integrate New Capabilities Utilizing Texas Instruments Broad Portfolio of Digital Signal Processors

HOUSTON (January 8, 2001) - Some of the most fascinating products exhibited by manufacturers at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week are driven by the TMS320C5000(tm) DSP platform from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN). They are the latest wave of products enabled by the DSP platform most widely adopted by engineers today, giving consumers more features and better performance in smaller packages than ever before. Among the TI customers exhibiting their latest electronic products at CES are Sanyo, Thomson Multimedia (RCA), JVC, Ericsson and Nokia.

TI's C5000™ DSPs power a wide variety of the most innovative electronic and portable appliances manufactured today. Some of the products that CES attendees might see include:

  • The compact Sun-Denshi Online Station for Playstation 2 -- a complete Internet gaming solution designed exclusively for Playstation 2, which includes application software with full browser and e-mail support. The TI C5000 DSP that powers PCTEL's Solsis modem produces a solution that is extremely small and power efficient, yet fully compliant with the telephone access methods of more than 130 countries - an important consideration when supporting a product with the worldwide acceptance of Playstation 2. Other manufacturers will employ TI DSP connectivity solutions as well, with product introductions expected throughout the year.

  • The Sanyo Internet audio player -- the first digital music player is fully compliant with the new Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) guidelines for copyright protection. The player is based on Liquid Audio's Secure Portable Player Platform and TI C5000 DSPs, and accepts music in multiple formats while preventing copying of copyrighted music.

  • The Thomson Multimedia (RCA) LYRA2 -- takes the company's critically acclaimed LYRA platform to new heights with greater storage capability and support for more digital music formats.

  • JVC's GR-DVM90 e-CyberCam -- integrates functions such as the ability to produce e-mail video clips and 12 types of sound effects, and is the first fully e-mail-ready digital camcorder. Based on the TMS320C54x™ DSP generation, the camcorder supports all current audio compression formats and allows up to 20 seconds of audio and animation to be attached to an e-mail. The C54x™ DSP generation makes these unique capabilities possible, and is the only solution that supports every popular digital audio and video format.

In addition, the newest and next generation Nokia and Ericsson wireless phones are enabled by TI technology, bringing the Internet to the palm of your hand. Each phone delivers features never before found in phones of their small size and weight, and provides exceptionally long talk and standby times because of TI's low-power C5000 DSPs.

"TI's C5000 DSP platform offers 16 low-power, code-compatible DSPs with the broadest array of power/performance
/price combinations than any other DSP vendor on the market today," said Dennis Barrett, C5000 marketing manager for Texas Instruments. "Manufacturers like these are getting their creative, Internet connected products to market faster than their competitors because we provide a complete solution with complementary analog products, complete technical documentation, and strong application and third party support, all backed by our award winning eXpressDSP™ Real-Time Software Technology."
