High-Performance 8-Channel Audio DAC from TI Targets DVD Audio and Surround-Sound Systems
Industry's first 8-channel audio DAC replaces multiple low-cost stereo DACs
TUCSON, AZ (Feb. 21, 2001) -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced an eight-channel audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC) from the company's Burr-Brown product line, which offers 24-bit resolution and 192kHz sampling rate. The PCM1608 is ideal for high-performance multi-channel audio systems such as DVD players, car audio systems, A/V receivers, HDTV receivers, home theater systems, and surround-sound processors. See http://www.ti.com/sc/aap5822u.
The PCM1608 targets audio systems which require or benefit from an eight-channel DAC solution, such as 7.1 channel playback formats. The general configuration of a DVD audio system is a 5.1 channel (six channels) plus a 2-channel stereo down mix - for a total of eight channels. Within these systems, the PCM1608 replaces multiple low-cost stereo DACs by combining eight 24-bit DACs and support circuitry on a single integrated circuit.
"By providing the audio industry with a single-chip, eight-channel DAC, TI enables customers to reduce board space and total cost, improve reliability and system accuracy, and achieve dynamic audio performance," said Yuzo Sugiki, marketing manager of Burr-Brown Audio Products from TI.
The PCM1608 utilizes TI's enhanced multi-level, delta-sigma architecture to achieve excellent signal-to-noise (SNR) performance. This highly-integrated device features 105dB dynamic range, 105dB SNR, and very low distortion (0.002%). Sampling rates up to 200kHz (channels 1, 2, 7, and 8) or 100kHz (channels 3, 4, 5, and 6) are supported.
The internal digital filter operates at 8x oversampling at 96kHz sample rate and 4x at 192kHz sample rate, with two selectable roll-off responses: sharp roll-off and slow roll-off. The digital filter offers -55dB stopband attenuation and +/-0.03dB passband ripple.
The PCM1608 accepts industry standard audio data formats with 16- to 24-bit data. Functions include digital de-emphasis, digital attenuation, soft mute, and zero flag for each channel. The device provides single-ended analog outputs, thus reducing the amount of external components needed. It operates on dual power supplies of +3.3V (digital) and 5V (analog).
Available Today
The PCM1608 is available now and is packaged in an LQFP-48. It is priced from $4.95 in 1,000 piece quantities.
