Bridging The Transition From Analog to Digital Video

Introduction

Several areas such as High Definition Terrestrial Broadcast, Digital Cable, and Flat Panel begin to evolve and emerge in consumer applications today. Though digital holds a place in the future of video, how the transition from analog video will occur is still being defined. In many consumer areas such as broadcast video, analog (NTSC/PAL/SECAM) will continue to be present and function in a mixed mode with digital video (such as MPEG2 formats). The challenge to bridge the analog and digital gap seamlessly lies in enhancing the number of acceptable analog interfaces and providing increased analog processing performance in comparison to digital video.

TI Digital Video & Imaging

Texas Instruments Digital Video & Imaging Team is focused on providing high performance products for the emerging consumer & high end video application areas. These products will continue to leverage Texas Instruments leadership in Analog & Mixed Signal by optimizing the performance of analog front end (integration with analog to digital converters) and back end (integration with digital to analog converters) solutions. Secondly, the Digital Video & Imaging Team will enable high level integration of digital processing functionality by utilizing TI's Advanced CMOS process technologies and TI's various packaging architectures. By continuing to focus on process technologies, packaging, TI's strategy is not only to enable high performance integrated products, but cost effective solutions as well.

Integration & Performance: TVP5145 NTSC/PAL/SECAM Video Decoder

The TVP5145 NTSC/PAL Decoder is one example of TI's high performance integrated analog & mixed signal video products. The TVP5145 has two built in 10 bit A/Ds integrated with clamping, automatic gain control functionalites and is complete with a patented microprocessor architecture. This architecture controls much of the analog functionality including automatic gain control, phase lock loop timing, and is optimized for locking to weak, unstable, and nonstandard video signals. The TVP5145 is ROM based which loads the firmware on power up. The firmware itself has been updated to significantly improve the weak signal and VCR performance. It has also been optimized for various functionalities and performance tradeoffs. While the TVP5145 is ROM based it does provide the additional benefit of patch RAM. This 2kb of patch RAM allows TI to provide customized solutions for specialized customer applications.

Available for purchase today is the TVP5145EVM. The TVP5145EVM enables quick functional verification of TVP5145 NTSC/PAL/SECAM Video Decoder & TVP6000 NTSC/PAL Video Encoder. It also provides a platform for displaying high-quality video and for taking video performance measurements.
