Analog temperature sensors

Analog temperature sensors provide a voltage or current output proportional to temperature. Analog temperature sensors require no external components and are more simple to implement than a thermistor.

Digital temperature sensors

Digital temperature sensors integrate an ADC, which offers simplicity and programmability. From standard interfaces like I2C/SMBus/SPI/UARTs, digital temp sensors directly report out the temperature with options to automatically sample and issues an alert should the temperature cross a programmable threshold.

Remote temperature sensors

Remote temperature sensors offer the ability to measure temperature at multiple locations from a single IC. These sensors can leverage any PN junction such as diodes, BJTs, or internal thermal diodes provided by FPGAs or processors.

To increase the accuracy of measuring external diodes, TI offers the following features with remote temperature sensors

• Series Resistance Cancellation:

  • Corrects for trace resistance in the PCB

• N-Factor Correction

  • Adjusts temperature calculations for the non-ideality factor of the external diode

• Beta Compensation

  • Adjusts for the beta of a diode which is needed for integrated diodes in process geometries below 90nm

Temperature switches/thermostats

Thermal protection at its simplest, temperature switches issue an interrupt when the temperature crosses a threshold. TI offers a variety of programmability options from factory preset to pin or resistor programmable.
