Home Gateway

A Home Gateway links home energy systems that use low power RF (LPRF) technologies like ZigBee® to any Wi-Fi router, so consumers can monitor or control their smart energy devices or home automation systems via smartphones or tablets. A powerful Sitara™ ARM®Cortex™A8 processor running Linux is typically used as the host which enables a wide range of software and firmware customization. It also enables the Home Gateway to manage communications, data processing and applications locally instead of relying on intelligence in the cloud.

Smart Grid Use Cases

Most Smart Electricity Meters in the US use a ZigBee chipset running the Smart Energy Profile (SEP) for communication with Home Area Network (HAN) devices such as In-Home-Displays (IHDs), thermostats, smart appliances, etc. Since Wi-Fi and Ethernet are more pervasive in today's homes, a Home Gateway to bridge between ZigBee and Wi-Fi or Ethernet can enable applications such as real-time energy monitoring on smartphones or interaction with Wi-Fi enabled smart appliances. Smart Grid deployments in the UK include a gateway known as a “communications hub” that uses ZigBee to communicate with the meters or HAN and <1-GHz or cellular technology for backhaul communications.
