Optical Networking: EPON

Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), also known as IEEE 802.3ah, is a collection of protocols specified in IEEE 802.3, defining the Ethernet in the access networks, i.e. first or last mile.

With Wide, Metro and Local Area Networks already standardized, the EFM allows continuous standard Ethernet network across the globe, eliminating non-native transport such as Ethernet over ATM from the access networks. EFM defines how Ethernet can be transmitted over Point-To-Multipoint (P2MP) fiber. These new interfaces are known under collective name Ethernet over Passive Optical Networks (EPON).

The typical Core Subsystem includes:

  • Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes): For high-speed full-duplex point-to-point data transmissions.
  • Clocks: Provide low jitter clock signals to the system.
  • Crosspoint Switch: For High-Speed Network Routing, Loopback and Redundancy.
  • Power Conversion: Provides power to the system from the host interface.
  • Medium Access Controller (MAC): Designed for access networks serving both business and residential subscribers.

TI SerDes devices are suitable for EPON/GEPON applications. The TLK1221 Gigabit Ethernet transceiver provides for high-speed full-duplex point-to-point data transmissions. The device is based on the timing requirements of the 10-bit interface specification by the IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet specification. The TLK1221 supports data rates from 0.6 Gbps through 1.3 Gbps.

The TLK2541 is a member of the WizardLink transceiver family of multigigabit transceivers, intended for use in high-speed bidirectional point-to-point data transmission systems. The TLK2541 supports an effective serial interface speed of 1 Gbps to 1.3 Gbps or 2 to 2.6 Gbps, providing over 2 Gbps of data bandwidth.

The primary application of these devices is to provide building blocks for point-to-point baseband data transmission over controlled-impedance media of 50 ohms .The transmission media can be printed-circuit board traces, copper cables or fiber-optical media. The ultimate rate and distance of data transfer is dependent upon the attenuation characteristics of the media and the noise coupling to the environment.
