TIDA-00218

Contactless AC-Current Sensing Using a Hall Effect Sensor

TIDA-00218

Design files

Overview

This reference design uses our hall sensing technology to determine the amount of AC current flowing through a wire without any physical intervention. TIDA-00218 implements a flux concentrator to concentrate the flux around the AC-current carrying wire, rather than letting it escape in air, and then directing that flux to a hall sensor.

Features
  • Contactless proximity current sensing for AC and 3-phase input currents
  • Maximum measured error less than 5% from 1-A to 10-A rms
  • Flux concentrator as described in this design improves the magnetic flux density by a factor of six (15 dB)
  • Only single-point gain correction at maximum current range; second-order curve fit implemented in firmware
  • Maximum current that is sensed can be adapted by changing the flux concentrator design
