Description

This reference design implements a smart meter data collector with protocol conversion between Meter Bus (M-Bus) and RS-485 networks. M-BUS and RS-485 networks can be mixed together in some network domains, requiring bridging capability to fully integrate the system. This design becomes an intermediate node that collects M-BUS data packets from individual flow meters and formats them for transmission across a larger RS-485 network to the primary data concentrator.

Features
  • Simple data collector with protocol conversion between M-Bus and RS-485 transceiver for cost-constrained applications
  • Isolated power supply output 24V to provide sufficient power for M-Bus master module to support more than 100 M-Bus slaves, 3.3V to power MSP432, and 5V to power RS-485 signal chain
  • Tested +/-2KV IEC61000-4-4 EFT, +/-8KV IEC61000-4-2 ESD, and CISPR22 Class-B conducted emission
  • The reference design EVM with extra pinouts (for SPI, UART, and GPIO) and the software examples allow ease of evaluation to support other wireless and wired communication protocols
