TIDM-ORIENTATIONTRACKER

Low Power Orientation Tracker Reference Design

TIDM-ORIENTATIONTRACKER

Design files

Overview

This reference application demonstrates how to combine an ultra-low-power MSP microcontroller, fixed-point software math libraries and an accelerometer for a low cost, ultra-low-power, simple orientation tracking solution. The MSP MCU samples the accelerometer and performs calculations in real time to determine its orientation and to detect when it is in free fall. By utilizing the IQmathLib optimized fixed point software library and excluding a gyroscope, this design can run on battery power for extended periods of time. This solution could be used to monitor tilt, drops or theft enabling a number of asset monitoring applications.

Features
  • MSP430G2 LaunchPad Development Kit(MSP-EXP430G2) + CircuitCo Educational BoosterPack plug-in module + Fuel Tank BoosterPack plug-in module enable orientation tracking and tilt detection
  • IQmathLib fixed point software for MSP MCUs provides optimized math performance
  • The MSP MCU samples an accelerometer at regular intervals and interprets the data as x,y,z components of gravity
  • Arc Tangent is calculated to determine current orientation, including pitch and roll
  • Source code is provided with projects for Code Composer Studio and IAR Embedded Workbench for MSP MCUs

  • Optimized fixed point functions - reduce development time and enable developers to focus on optimizing application code
  • Up to 100x higher performance when executing common fixed point scalar math functions in CCS – this means the MSP microcontroller can remain in low power modes longer than ever before
  • Free – simply use in Code Composer Studio or download the library

Release Infomation

The Texas Instruments® MSP IQmath and Qmath Libraries are a collection of highly optimized and high-precision mathematical functions for C programmers to seamlessly port a floating-point algorithm into fixed-point code on MSP430 and MSP432 devices. These routines are typically used in computationally intensive real-time applications where optimal execution speed, high accuracy and ultra-low energy are critical. By using the IQmath and Qmath libraries, it is possible to achieve execution speeds considerably faster and energy consumption considerably lower than equivalent code written using floating-point math.
