Other
ways to help
You can volunteer for one of our programs or become an advocate
by serving as a mentor and role model.
For those of you who want to make a difference and an impact
on the lives of these young girls, here is how you can help:
Volunteer at the Advanced Placement (AP) Physics Camps
for Girls: this two week camp raises awareness
of opportunities in STEM, boosts confidence and provides support.
During the camp, the girls study electricity in the lab, wire
circuits with resistors and capacitors, work on interesting
projects and participate in interactive talks focused on modern
topics such as relativity and particle physics.
- We need the following:
-Instructor
-Speaker
-Panelist
-Facilitator
- Speak at TI hosted Events: these events
provide an opportunity for the girls to come to TI and see
and learn what TI is all about and hear presentations and
panel discussions from TI women engineers.
- Help organize events
- Help plan and / or facilitate End of Summer Camp
Event: hosted by the Women’s Museum – this event
is thrown for the girls who have completed the physics summer
camp and for us to show our appreciation and congratulate
them on their successful completion of the event. We invite
counselors, teachers, parents, TIers and the girls themselves
to attend.
- Be a mentor or role model:
- Objective: Build helping relationships for the girls
(mentee)
- Assist the mentee in understanding the goals of the
Women of TI Fund and how the Fund is assisting them
in achieving their goals.
- Provide the mentee with practical advice and suggestions
on how to get into a Technology field or Science or
Math field.
- Encourage the mentee to work with others in forming
relationships inside and outside the camp.
- Objective: Help them realize their potential
- Foster a confidential relationship with your mentee
- Create an atmosphere of trust in the mentor/mentee
relationship
- Be a good listener and take mentee seriously
- Advise the mentee in balancing family, personal and
school life
- Be a role model, sharing your experiences in a professional
and academia setting
- Objective: Provide additional support to your mentee
- Help the mentee identify and maximize her strengths
- Motivate the mentee and encourage personal confidence
- Challenge the mentee reach for higher goals and think
outside the box
- Mentor Responsibilities:
- Face to face meetings – schedule monthly
- Regular email or phone communications with mentee
- Assist mentee with goals and a career development
plan
Time Commitment: dependent on the event
and your schedule. Mentors should prepare to devote 2 to
3 hours monthly.
